This fellowship explored best practice in supporting and engaging students who are the first in their families to come to university. The terms first in family or first generation are used in this report interchangeably to identify students who are the first in their immediate family to participate in university, this includes parents, siblings, partners and children. This is a growing student population globally and one that is highly intersected by equity categories, such intersectionality impacting on student retention and completion. By investigating how institutions across the UK, Canada and the US consider these learners, the fellowship foregrounds innovative approaches and thinking in this regard.
The fellowship enabled me to visit university sites across each of these locations and to both witness practical initiatives targeted at supporting this first in family (FiF) cohort and also, to have discussions with leading researchers and academics in the topic. The fellowship had a dual-fold focus seeking to explore innovative theoretical applications as well as investigate how various interventions are implemented.

Social enterprises deliver significant benefits for disadvantaged or marginalised segments of society that need assistance to transform their social or economic prospects. For individuals they provide meaningful work and skills development and provide a pathway into mainstream employment. In this way they also reduce unemployment in a region and contribute to increased connections and community vitality. From a broader perspective, social enterprises have the potential to grow established businesses and drive inclusive economic growth. The purpose of this Fellowship was to research successful social enterprise programs across the world and identify supports and enablers required to attain similar positive outcomes in the Fellows' community, and apply these learnings to expand the Centre for Participation's social enterprise program, boost engagement and employment, and reinvigorate the Wimmera Southern Mallee.

Project description: To investigate structured pathways from secondary school to employment in the salmon aquaculture industry in Norway and Scotland with specific focus on vocational education apprenticeships involving formal partnerships between industry and education providers. I explored the 2+2 model of apprenticeship pathways in Norway which begin in VGS or upper-secondary school and continue in industry, together with the 4 year TAF model which additionally provides for a tertiary education pathway. In Scotland I explored the connections between secondary school National Progression Award programs in Aquaculture and Modern Apprenticeships in industry including partnerships between colleges and employers. I also explored the developing Foundation Apprenticeships model which is being implemented in the senior years of secondary schooling.

Due to the rapid growth of automotive industries in countries such as China, the objective of these countries is to increase their capability and capacity to improve the quality and number of qualified technicians entering the local workforce. There currently exists a skills shortage in China in relation to the automotive industry and therefore the opportunity exists for the Australian education sector to provide training to students studying in Australia who would like to gain future placement or employment within the Chinese automotive industry. The automotive industry in Australia has also been experiencing skill shortages in both technical and managerial areas. The overseas component of the Overseas Applied Research Fellowship Programme enabled advanced technical and management skills to be brought back to Australia for education and training opportunities.

In Australia, statistics show there is a high need for flexible and adaptable approaches to engage and support disadvantaged learners - both in regard to staying engaged in learning and in transitioning after compulsory education. The aim of this study tour to the United States was to explore innovative strategies of working with disadvantaged learners regarding education pedagogies that engage disadvantaged students; engagement strategies that help to keep students in education; and transitions/pathways support strategies that help students move on successfully into further education and/or employment. The author visited practice based education programs and research based programs, and attended the 2017 Harvard School of Education Project Zero Conference. These three different perspectives provided an overview of innovations and challenges facing the US education system regarding transitions for young people. The report documents education pedagogies, engagement strategies with a focus on homelessness, juvenile justice diversionary programs and foster care, and pathway and transition strategies aimed at enabling transition to further education or employment.

A distinctive characteristic of study tours is their immersive nature, and the type of learning developed in such circumstances often relies on instinctive skills related to confidence, flexibility, curiosity, resilience and risk taking. To discover more about these learning experiences for adult undergraduate students studying varying disciplines in the creative industries at an Australian University, the researchers employed educational action research and developed assessment modules to foster student awareness of intangible skills and personal characteristics during short-term international study tours. On the completion of the tours, participating staff and students provided feedback, via a questionnaire and focus group discussions, that assessed the value of these modules in promoting learning and their contribution to personal growth and cultural sensitivity. Findings show that these modules were highly effective at enabling adult students to become aware of the skills they employed while being actively engaged in international study tours. This study highlights the potential significance of immersive assessment modules that provide specific ways for students to engage with their host country and the cultural differences to which they are exposed.

The aim of this Fellowship was to visit international institutions that provide high quality educational models which support deaf students participating in vocational education and training (VET). The countries visited were the UK, USA and NZ. The Fellowship also provided an opportunity to participate in the largest higher education conference for professionals working with students with disability, AHEAD 2016, which included a stream dedicated to issues affecting deaf and hard of hearing learners. The author notes that for deaf people in Australia, access to post-secondary education can be rather haphazard and unstructured. Support services provided may not be sufficient to ensure that deaf students are able to successfully complete their degrees. To ensure increased participation and capability of deaf students in post-secondary education, it is vital that a new and holistic national model of support be introduced. One such model, the three-tiered inclusion model, is proposed in this report and highlights a move away from just addressing barriers to communication access but considers holistic education, addresses inclusion and embraces full participation in education. It focuses on a strengths based approach which builds on the potential capabilities of individual deaf students.

This Fellowship identified international examples of successful responses to blended learning, especially to support disadvantaged and vulnerable [vocational education and training] VET learners. Research was conducted at Temasek Polytechnic Singapore, Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (MITD) and RMIT College of Vocational Education; all three institutions are members of the UNESCO-UNEVOC network with success in applying blended learning. The report concludes that effective blended learning involves a range of strategies including specific teacher professional development, supporting student digital literacy, use of the blended learning continuum and interactive educational tools. Furthermore, the report recommends that institutions establish dedicated blended learning mentors or 'champions' for peer-to-peer training and support.
