One way of reducing natural resource consumption is to install new technology into buildings and homes (e.g. geothermal heating systems, biomass boiler heating systems and grey water recycling). As this technology is still in its infancy in Australia, there are a limited number of tradespeople who are sufficiently skilled to provide advice and services. There is, therefore, a need to increase and improve education in the use of renewable energy, and to develop training programs that incorporate sustainable trade practices. The overseas component of the Overseas Applied Research Fellowship Program, in Ireland and England, allowed for investigation into the use of renewable energy heating systems and grey water recycling technology in the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland, where there have been rapid advancements in 'green' plumbing practices.

This report is based on an International Specialised Skills Institute Fellowship study tour to the US to help address two key questions currently facing the Australian automotive training sector: How do we teach new automotive technologies to our existing automotive apprentices or our qualified automotive technicians? How can we use these automotive technologies and innovative methods to attract a new group of students to our colleges? The tour enabled the Fellow to gain first-hand knowledge of new and emerging automotive technologies in the US via a mix of observational training provider site visits and attendance at conferences, and to experience how these new technologies are being delivered to automotive students. The tour identified that the level of training provided in the US is not currently available in Australia. The report presents recommendations for consideration by training providers, educators, peak industry bodies, manufacturers, dealers, students and government.

This report is about career guidance in English secondary schools, and how it could be made better. Career guidance has been much criticised, but what would it look like were it good? To find out, visits were undertaken to six countries [Canada (Ontario), Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Ireland] where earlier studies suggested that both career guidance and educational results are good, and discussions held with teachers, pupils and ministry officials. Five independent schools in England were also visited as a result of good anecdotal reports. In addition, a study was made of the available literature on career guidance in state schools. From all this input, a judgement was made on what 'good' career guidance looks like. These judgements are presented in the form of eight benchmarks, identifying different dimensions of good career guidance.
English secondary schools were then surveyed to see how they measure up against the benchmarks, and PricewaterhouseCoopers was asked to do an independent exercise to identify the costs of implementing the benchmarks across the system, resulting in the report 'Assessing benchmarks of good practice in school career guidance'. Drawing on all this work, a set of recommendations about how the English system could improve has been developed. The report focuses on the English system but the benchmarks would be equally applicable to the other nations of the UK. 'Career guidance' has been broadly interpreted to include all those activities intended to assist young people in making decisions about future education, training and jobs.

Snakes - the very word is extremely emotive. Everyone has an opinion on these quintessentially Australian reptiles, and sadly it is a mostly negative one, with many myths, legends and misunderstandings. That these attitudes remain today is a great shame both for the snakes themselves that suffer undue persecution, and for individuals who live with unwarranted lifelong anxiety towards them and many other species of Australian native wildlife. However, despite the fact that snakes are something that most Australians are likely to encounter in life sooner or later, either at leisure, around our homes, or in association with the workplace, they remain poorly understood by the average person. Unfortunately few if any Australians receive much meaningful wildlife awareness education. I think this is a great oversight of our education system, particularly as ours is an increasingly urbanized population, detached from daily interactions with nature. We would all benefit from qualified information on the realities of living with our wildlife and understanding its importance in the environment. From a safety perspective we should all know how to react to snakes and other potentially hazardous wildlife and crucially what to do in terms of first aid in case of a snake bite or other envenomation.
Animal Ark Pty Ltd are licensed to deliver Wildlife Educational programs to schools and deliver a Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) endorsed training course for licensing Reptile Removalists in WA. This involves training people to understand snakes and learn safe and effective means of catching, containing and relocating snakes and other reptiles whilst minimizing the risks involved. This license is sought by those wishing to serve as a volunteer within their community and also by people working in rural and remote regions. My application and subsequent reward of a 2012 Churchill Trust Fellowship was inspired by a desire to improve these educational outcomes for all Australians by investigating approaches to and content of snake capture and management, first aid training and general wildlife education programs overseas [in South Africa and Botswana, and in the United States of America in Florida, New Mexico and California].

In response to a large sectoral skills, network and knowledge gap, the Fellow, a leatherworker and designer, undertook an exploration of leather making, tanning and design through Italy. In this report, comparisons of teaching styles, methodologies and techniques are made, while the historical and cultural impact of leatherworking traditions, and more broadly artisan crafts, are examined. The report seeks to highlight the widespread value of leatherworking and specialised trades, encourage industry growth in production and design, and makes the recommendation for an inclusive Australian leatherworking training program.
