The condition of education 2014

'The condition of education', produced by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), is an annual publication that uses key indicators to summarise important developments and trends in education in the United States. The 42 indicators in the 2014 report focus on population characteristics, participation in education, elementary and secondary education, and postsecondary education. The report shows that: about 90 per cent of young adults aged 25 to 29 had a high school diploma or its equivalent in 2013, and that 34 per cent had a bachelor's or higher degree; the percentage of 25- to 64-year-olds who had earned a bachelor's or higher degree was higher in 2011 than in 2001 in the United States and across OECD countries; in 2012, young adults with a bachelor's degree earned more than twice as much as those without a high school credential and 57 per cent more than young adult high school completers; in 2013, the unemployment rate for those with at least a bachelor's degree was lower than the rates for those with lower levels of educational attainment; in 2012, 47 per cent of 18- to 19-year-olds and 40 per cent of 20- to 24-year-olds were enrolled in postsecondary education; the status dropout rate decreased from 12 per cent in 1990 to seven per cent in 2012, with most of the decline occurring since 2000; and the number of years of school that high school dropouts completed increased from 1990 to 2012.
