Attrition rates provide a measure of the proportion of students who 'drop out' of [Queensland University of Technology] QUT each year. Attrition rates are one of a range of indicators used to measure performance at QUT. As such they should be viewed in conjunction with other indicators such as access, participation and retention rates to obtain a full picture of performance. For policy and program development it is important to know if particular groups or categories of students are more inclined to drop out of higher education than others, and whether attrition is greater in particular faculties.
Attrition rates measure the proportion of students in a particular year (first year or cohort year) who leave the university and do not re-enrol the following year (the outcome year). For the purposes of this report [the authors] are measuring students who commenced in 2013 (cohort year) and whether or not they returned or did not reenrol in 2014. The attrition rate for all QUT students in 2013-2014 has lowered to 11.70 per cent from 13.04 per cent in 2012-2013. Attrition has been around 12-13 per cent in previous years, with a break in the trend in 2010-2011, where it was at its lowest (10.76 per cent). The university's objective is that students in equity groups have attrition rates comparable to other students. For example, Indigenous student attrition is at 17.27 per cent compared with 11.70 per cent for all QUT students and students with a disability have a rate of attrition at 14.14 per cent compared with the overall QUT figure of 11.70 per cent. Some equity target groups drop out at much higher levels in some faculties compared with others, indicating a need to develop additional mechanisms to support these particular cohorts within their disciplines.

[Queensland University of Technology] QUT, as with all other Australian universities in receipt of federal government funding, monitors the access, representation, success, retention and attrition of the following student equity target groups designated by the Department of Education: Aboriginal students and Torres Strait Islander students; students from non-English speaking backgrounds (nEsb); students from regional and remote areas; students from low socio-economic status (LSES) backgrounds; students with a disability (SWD); and women in non-traditional areas of study. This publication presents available data for these groups.

Skills Australia commissioned Access Economics to undertake research and analysis on the future demand for post-school skills and qualifications to 2025. The task involves examination of both the labour supply of skills (demand by prospective students) and the labour demand for skills (demand by industry). The reporting of projected qualification demand covers both higher education and vocational education and training (VET), and uses the following categories: Postgraduate qualifications; Undergraduate qualifications; Advanced diploma/Diploma; Certificate III/Certificate IV; and Certificate I/Certificate II. The projections are presented within the context of three scenarios being examined by Skills Australia, termed open doors, low-trust globalisation and flags. A report detailing the task, assumptions used and key results at the national level has been provided to Skills Australia. This supplementary paper presents key modelling results at the State/Territory level for each of the scenarios. The methodology employed is the same as at the national level and readers should consult the main report to Skills Australia for further details.

Since 2003, Southbank Institute of Technology has been offering dual awards with partner universities in the Brisbane metropolitan area, notably Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, and the University of the Sunshine Coast. Over the past few years, the number of these offerings has increased from a handful to a projected 40+ in 2008. This paper will report on research undertaken by the Institute's Applied Sciences team which comprises teachers experienced in the delivery of dual award programs. This paper seeks to engage with one of the conference's key themes, students and individuals, by reporting on trends in the number of students who enrol in Southbank's cross-sectoral programs, students' motivation for choosing such pathways and finally how students perform both in the [vocational education and training] VET and higher education components of the dual awards.

Persistent low completion and participation rates of young people in [vocational education and training] VET - particularly those from low [socioeconomic status] SES communities - pose significant challenges to policymakers and VET practitioners alike. [The presenter] present[s] early findings of research now underway into the factors that impede or facilitate participation, engagement and completion of vocational training, with a particular focus on young people at the margins of the system. The settings are Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania. The research looks at distinct phases of the young person's experiences, from intent to enrol, to the quality of their enrolment experience, and then the level of engagement and completion. This presentation will report on the analytical framework [the presenter] devised that can shed light on these phases. It will also convey insights gleaned from initial consultations, interviews and focus groups with intermediary agencies and services who are in close proximity to these young 'hard to reach' people. These consultations precede direct interaction with young people. Included will be young people who have commenced, but not completed, vocational training as well as those who may have balked at undertaking training.

This brief article provides an overview of training in the civil construction sector in Queensland. It questions whether training in the sector is sufficient to meet the increasing demand for a skilled workforce. It concludes that while vocational education and training is providing employment pathways to help meet the demand for a skilled workforce, the majority who are undertaking training are not the traditional young apprentice, but older or existing workers looking to enter the industry or to up-skill. This paper provides an analysis of completions and cancellations from apprenticeship training contracts in Queensland, focusing on the differences between Indigenous apprentices with and without a mentor. Interest lies in this topic because of the observed high cancellation rate among apprentices, and the generally higher rate for Indigenous apprentices. The study uses administrative data collected and maintained by the Queensland Department of Education, Training and Employment. A multistate modelling approach is adopted to account for the fact that many apprentices experience multiple episodes of training. Overall, the results indicate that apprentices with a mentor face a significantly lower risk of cancellation.

This document is based on analysis of 'Government-funded students and courses 2020' [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 144.09]. In 2020, 103,490 government-funded students were enrolled in construction, plumbing and services (CPC) qualifications. This is the second highest level of enrolments for a training package, behind community services which had 224,675 enrolments. Of the 103,490 students enrolled in CPC qualifications, 35,740 were enrolled in Victoria, more than any other state or territory. In 2020, females represented a record high 5.0 per cent of government-funded CPC students. Nearly one in five students enrolled in a CPC Advanced Diploma were female - the highest proportion of any qualification level and well above the level with the lowest female participation (Certificate III at 2 per cent). The top three qualifications of government-funded CPC students in Australia in 2020 were: Certificate III Carpentry: 26,990 students; Certificate III Plumbing: 16,125 students; and Certificate IV Building and Construction: 12,095 students. The top three occupations in 2020 were: Carpenter and Joiner: 30,100; Plumber: 21,700; and Labourer: 19,185.
