The paper examines the link between workplace disability (WD) and job satisfaction (JS) in Britain using linked data from [Workplace Employment Relations Study] WESR2011. The results obtained indicate workplaces with respondents with disabilities report lower JS vis-a-vis workplaces without such respondents in the private sector. Within private sector workplaces with mixed respondents, the JS of respondents without disabilities declines with the percentage of respondents with disabilities. Also, workplace disability policies and practices are positively (negatively) associated with the JS of respondents with (without) disabilities in the sector. The sector may have to re-examine its dealings with issues of workplace disability.

Technological change is considered to induce upward biases in the demand for skills and contribute to increases in wage inequality in more developed countries. This paper uses an extension of the Roma model of innovation to show how technological change affects the demand for skills and the role of workers in the process of innovation. The paper concludes that successful technological innovation may be restricted by the workers' flexibility level. Flexibility is defined as the ability and willingness of workers to undertake new tasks as a result of innovation at the workplace. Lack of flexibility may render the innovative activity unprofitable and therefore hinder an innovation-based development process. The author suggests that the analysis provided in this paper has opened up the possibility of exploring the impact of technological change on wages, and whether it has more to do with the range of tasks workers are capable of performing over time than with the quantity of human capital they have acquired in the past. This chapter focuses on guidance activities that are brought into the actual workplace. Two aspects of this approach are examined. The first is the policy linking between guidance and lifelong learning. The second is approaches to workplace guidance about education and training, using evaluations of workplace guidance initiatives organised by trade unions and employers in Denmark, Iceland and the UK. In the conclusion, the author points to power issues behind workplace guidance that may hinder its effectiveness in terms of promoting lifelong learning, and that need to be addressed cooperatively by guidance practitioners, employers, and trade unions.

It reviews the following points: main impacts of measures/initiatives at the company level; driving forces for implementing good practice at the company level; characteristics of particularly successful measures/policies; key lessons that can be drawn from implementing measures and initiatives; future issues concerning age-management raised at company level; development of national policy concerning an ageing workforce; relevant actions of social partners and other key actors: policies and practices; and, finally, the status of the issue of older workers in current policy and public debates: identification of future issues.

This article reports on research carried out under the Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC's) Learning Society Programme. The program comprised 14 projects involving research into the learning society and the ways in which it can contribute to the development of knowledge and skills for employment and in other areas of adult life. The article is one of a series of comparative studies which explore notions of lifelong learning, learning organisation and learning society in Europe and, in some cases, reflect on the use of comparative research in the social sciences. It outlines the introductory steps towards a possible framework for transnational comparisons of continuous vocational training (CVT), also referred to as 'company training'. The authors compare innovations in CVT within companies in the United Kingdom (UK), France and Spain. In the last two decades, CVT has become increasingly associated with organisational change and restructuring for competitiveness and flexibility, but also serves as a buffer against change through the qualification of employees and the anticipation of employment trends and skill requirements. In addition, all three countries have experienced deregulation to varying degrees and the authors demonstrate how each country has developed a form of 'social compromise' between the quest for economic competitiveness and the protection of employees from the effects of deregulation. The article indicates that cross-national comparison of innovation in company training requires the comparison of emerging 'compromises' within increasingly flexible and deregulated environments.

The Adult Learners’ Lives project is based at Lancaster University Literacy Research Centre in the UK. Launched in September 2002, it studies people’s uses of language, literacy and numeracy at home, in the community and at work, their reasons for attending and continuing to attend classes, their perceptions of what they are learning and of how useful it is to them. It involves a detailed longitudinal study of learners’ lives in order to understand the connections that adults make between learning and their everyday lives. This interim report covers activities from the first year of the project at the three case study sites of Blackburn, Lancaster and Liverpool, including negotiating access to the sites and establishing the relationships for the research. The report presents the data that has been collected in the three sites and the initial data analysis. It also describes the Teacher-Researcher program, which has been a key element of the project, along with initial reports of the six projects, covering literacy, numeracy and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), which the teacher-researchers have been carrying out. Summaries of the literature reviews of topics undertaken in the early stages of the project are provided. The report also discusses the overall themes emerging from the first year of the research, the approach to making an impact on policy and practice, and future plans. Some initial findings from the research are that: relationships are important to learning; health is often a barrier to learning; there is a complex relationship between teaching and learning; and involving teachers in research projects can have considerable impact on their professional development, the culture of their workplaces and on regional networks. This paper explores informal learning in the multi-professional workplace. Drawing on a two year, multi-method qualitative study the paper presents the reflections of a wide range of professionals on their workplace learning. The work of Etienne Wenger is used to help conceptualise and understand what is happening in these increasingly wide-spread workplaces.

Using data from Canada, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong and Indonesia, this paper tests the concept that training should be viewed as only one (perhaps small) factor in the drive towards world-class productivity. Rather, it is a combination of social science and physical science factors that must be managed, if productivity is to improve. This gap analysis technique focuses on reactive and proactive job analyses to develop programs of workplace change. Even when utilised in widely varying cultures, the model yields comparable results.

The present paper argues that university quality assurance (QA) promotes a masculinist culture leading to systemic discrimination against female academics. The analysis relates to the question of what it is about academic life that results in persistent gender inequality. Based on an ethnographically informed comparative study, textual/discourse analysis of 30 interviewee transcripts reveals disguised messages about QA. The interpretation argued draws on a theoretical scrutiny of the covert power of a masculinist QA movement to disproportionately disadvantage female academics. The paper suggests that this has been made possible by a QA presentation discourse harnessed by male academics to manage identities. It argues that dominant definitions of the ‘competent academic’ that discriminate against females are normalised and cemented within a societal conscience.
