In recent decades, the Sri Lankan government has introduced reforms aimed at enhancing education access and quality, as well as emphasizing the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), which are crucial fields for economic development and social inclusion. This report examines how access to STEM education can affect enrollments at various levels (lower, upper secondary, higher education, and technical and vocational training) and careers in the labor market. The report also analyzes STEM education status by gender at the central, provincial, and district levels, and it highlights factors that enable and hinder the achievement of desired outcomes.
The report offers a wide range of interventions to boost student access and teacher training, including developing digital learning materials and technology-based tools to broaden service delivery, facilitate learning, and support an inclusive public education system. In addition, it proposes policy options at the central and provincial levels. The findings and recommendations can be used to guide policy and investments to achieve the country's potential to expand human capital, foster inclusion, contribute to economic development and competitiveness, promote recovery from the economic crisis, and build resilience.

Female participation in the labour market is considerably low in Sri Lanka. Considering past years, the unemployment rate for females is almost double that of male unemployment. Women have [also] faced obstacles in accessing skills development for some occupational areas [particularly] technical related vocational training programmes. Therefore, the main objective of the research is to find the factors that have an effect on females [undertaking] vocational training in technical occupations. Other objectives are to find out difficulties encountered by females to follow technical training during the courses and to [discover] prospects and constraints for female employment in technical trade in Sri Lanka.

This paper discusses the preliminary findings from a doctoral study about the migration of young single women professionals from Sri Lanka to New Zealand. The migration of highly educated single women, such as the study's participants, from third world to first world countries, is a new global social phenomenon. While it is a response to the requirements of the global knowledge labour market, it affects both sending and receiving countries. The research study examines the effects on Sri Lanka and New Zealand and on the individual women themselves. It is intended that the study will contribute to the relatively small literature on independent middle class female migration from developing to developed countries in the contemporary period. The findings, which are discussed in the paper, suggest that the women are upwardly mobile and aspire to non-traditional occupations which enable them to become autonomous decision-makers. The findings also show that, interestingly, there is no evidence of any ambivalence towards these aspirations despite the women's early acculturation into traditional gendered roles. They are thoroughly modern women.

Women are entering the workforce in Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka in unprecedented numbers. Despite this increase however, they are still visible in only a handful of occupations. The vast majority are working in low-paying jobs requiring limited skills and offering very little or no opportunity for mobility or career development.
This report comprises the findings of four national workshops, undertaken to review the results of the research phase of the project and establish the basis for the formulation of national positive action plans. Show less

Building a skilled and diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce is crucial for economic development, cross-border trade, and social inclusion in South Asia. However, underrepresentation of girls and women in STEM education and careers remains a persistent issue. What kinds of macro and micro socioeconomic interventions are needed to increase girls' and women's access to and participation in STEM education and careers in South Asia? This report compares trends in South Asia with global trends to examine how access to and choices of STEM fields affect girls' enrollment in upper secondary education, technical and vocational education and training, and higher education in the region as well as their selection of careers. Based on the analysis, it offers recommendations to policy makers and practitioners to improve inclusion.
The following are among the findings: (1) the five key opportunities to foster inclusion and enrollment in STEM education - and staunch the 'leaky pipeline' - are at the upper primary, lower and upper secondary, and tertiary education levels, and during the early career years; (2) a strong pathway from STEM education to career depends on an integrated, systematic approach that motivates students to pursue STEM fields, builds STEM skills, and removes barriers to diversity; and (3) with the increasing migration of workers between countries in South Asia, preparing a critical mass of semiskilled and skilled STEM migrant workers has cross-border value, especially for workers migrating from smaller to larger economies.
New ways of defining STEM occupations are required to help develop and sustain female interest in STEM education and careers. Potential strategies that governments can pursue include raising awareness and building knowledge and skills in STEM outside the formal academic environment, such as in after-school programs, science fairs and competitions, and summer camps, and developing and systematically disseminating standardized resources. Inclusion and diversity must be championed by governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders who stand to benefit from more diverse workforces. Though women themselves would likely be credible champions, in South Asia they are often constrained by a range of factors. This report addresses some of those obstacles.

In many countries across Asia and the Pacific, women have increased their number in the newsrooms. But the media are still very male dominated: on the global scale women make up only 24 per cent of the people heard, read about or seen in the news and only few manage to reach decision-making positions within media organizations. What are the working conditions and career development opportunities of women journalists in those countries? What challenges do they face and how do they address them? Can local good practices be emulated elsewhere? Which gender-sensitive policies are favoured by the journalists themselves? This research study highlights how issues of gender impact the lives and work of journalists in the region with specific case studies from Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu. It comprises a regional report and recommendations to foster gender equality in the media today.
