This report outlines the results of a national survey on current practice in sustainable development in the learning and skills sector. The survey was carried out following the publication of From here to sustainability - the Learning and Skills Council strategy on education for sustainable development [indexed at TD/TNC 83.465]. The survey assessed how sustainable development was being addressed in the four key areas of leadership and management, buildings and estates, teaching and learning programmes and community and business. There is evidence that the learning and skills sector is making progress on implementing the sustainable development agenda in most areas.

Recent years have seen an increase in youth unemployment internationally. In South Africa, where the overall levels of unemployment are high, around 49 per cent of South Africans aged between 15 and 24 years old were unemployed in 2010 (National Treasury, 2011). The need to address this problem has led to a growing focus by governments and organisations on enterprise training - an approach which may offer young people the opportunity to develop the skills, attitudes, personal qualities and knowledge needed for self-employment. This report presents findings from an evaluation conducted by the City and Guilds Centre for Skills Development (CSD) of Junior Achievement South Africa's (JASA) new Entrepreneurship Academy. The evaluation is based on surveys and interviews with the participants of the three pilot schools running the JASA Entrepreneurship Academy. The evaluation focused on changes in learners' attitudes towards entrepreneurship and business skills, as well as their experience of the programme.

The demand for international training derives from global market forces and the pressures such forces exert on labour markets. The paper analyses competitive market forces within the global economy, multinational firms, and the United States (US) labour market to provide a framework for a projective model of international training demand in the US until the year 2005. The demand for internationally trained employees is estimated to be 1.65 million by 2005 - or an average annual increase of 75 000. Fifty-seven per cent of the training will be for employees who traditionally are trained in institutions of higher education. This implies a 17 per cent annual increase in training supply for all training at all levels through the year 2005.
