An essential element of career education is developing the knowledge and practical skills required to find out about the wide variety of available careers and the post-school education options that provide a pathway to these jobs. This research examined the cultural and learning support in this area provided by a group of educators that the researchers have called Indigenous education paraprofessionals (hereafter IEPs). IEPs are school-based educators and include roles such as: Aboriginal Education Officer; Learning Support Officer; Norta Norta Tutor; Koorie Engagement Support Officer; Aboriginal Support Tutor; Aboriginal Mentor; and Special Education Support Assistant. The 'Yarning the way' project looked at their 'connecting' and 'translational' role, particularly as it related to guiding Indigenous students towards post-school education options.
The research focus was the role of IEPs in working with Indigenous young people, their families and communities towards access to and participation in post-school education, particularly higher education. The research involved face-to-face individual yarning and yarning circles, conducted in New South Wales, the Northern Territory and Victoria. There were 35 IEP participants (23 Female, 12 Male) with 28 employed in high schools and seven in primary schools. This report focuses on two main areas: (1) enabling post-school educational futures for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth; and (2) the role of Indigenous education paraprofessionals in enabling positive futures.

This Guide provides information about, and examples of, good practice in teaching and learning for vocational education and training (VET) providers. It was commissioned by the Department of Education and Training (DET) and developed by drawing on the wide and varied experiences of VET practitioners working in the government-subsidised training market in Victoria. The Victorian Government's agenda for a strong TAFE and training system, Skills First, includes a strong commitment to high quality training. It is intended that this Guide will assist training providers in their ongoing practice and support their objectives to consistently strengthen and improve their teaching, learning and assessment practice.

Joondalup Campus, North Metropolitan College of TAFE, will be developed on the basis of open learning. Fundamental to its success will be staff roles consistent with the required student-centred, integrated-curriculum approach to skills development. Observing how staff in Victorian and South Australian TAFE colleges operate, the Joondalup team has been able to identify human resource issues to be considered in the development of Joondalup Campus. Terms of reference were: (1) to investigate skills requirements for personnel operating in an open learning institution; (2) to identify the way in which the staff skills mix has been structured in open learning institutions in other states; (3) to outline an initial model for human resources at Joondalup Campus; (4) to provide information on other human resource management issues related to the development of Joondalup Campus. A bibliography of materials collected during the teams visits and a feedback questionnaire are included.

[This] Fellowship investigates improved and innovative ways to support new educators as they enter vocational and higher education. This work has been influenced by experts in both the USA and Canada. The report investigates four interrelated components: (1) To improve the educational experience for new educators; (2) To improve educational experiences for students who share learning communities with new educators; (3) To upskill leaders to work effectively and provide organised structures to support new educators in areas of high impact; and (4) To offer organisations an approach to retain new educators and avoid time and money in the continuous cycle of employment and reemployment.

The nominal group technique (NGT) is a structured process to gather information from a group. The technique was first described in 1975 and has since become a widely-used standard to facilitate working groups. The NGT is effective for generating large numbers of creative new ideas and for group priority setting. This paper describes the process of conducting workshops using the NGT with managers and senior educators in a metropolitan [technical and further education] TAFE institute in Australia. The primary purpose of the activity was to ascertain what additional support the participants required in a period of intense change. The secondary purpose was to introduce NGT to an organisation that had hitherto not used NGT in formal evaluation of programs or performance. The paper provides an analysis of the data generated during the workshops and discusses the effectiveness of the technique for the participants.

Engaging in the arts can help with language and literacy development. The use of the arts to assist with language development has fast become internationally recognised for its unique and transformative approach to learning. With this in mind, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and VicTESOL recently collaborated to host a workshop for teachers, Teaching English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) through the Arts at the NGV on 17 March 2023. This article provides a detailed description of the workshop and advocates for the establishment of a program with a focus on the arts in EAL/D where teachers would have the opportunity to participate in action research and attend targeted workshops on a long-term basis.

In the increasingly competitive and turbulent vocational education and training (VET) environment, the imperative for educators to be innovative has never been greater. Bringing a sociomaterial perspective to bear (Fenwick, Edwards and Sawchuk, 2011), this paper investigates what it takes for educators to be innovative and what innovative practice looks like. It invites the reader to look at innovation in a different light; one that seeks to understand what occurs in a 'relational' way by following the webs of relations in which the practice occurs. This paper draws from a broader qualitative study involving five cases of innovative pedagogic practice in different Victorian VET contexts. The broader research question is: how might we create and sustain the conditions for innovative pedagogic practice in VET in times of change and uncertainty. The paper challenges the tendency for mono-causal explanations of pedagogic practice that underscore policy interventions aimed at driving innovation with empirical accounts that reveal the complexity of pedagogic practices and the difficulties educators face when innovating. Drawing on concepts from material semiotics and relatedly, poststructuralist theory, this study looks at the binaries that arise in the practice of one VET educator as he negotiates the uneasy 'spaces in between' to innovate.

Drawing upon the experiences of a group of academics who were responsible for the teaching and coordination of a newly established offshore program, this study considers intercultural learning during transnational education (TNE) sojourns and demonstrates that the personal and pedagogical adaptation required of academics is significant. The study combines data from pre-, during- and post-sojourn interviews with detailed observations of offshore teaching. This ethnographic methodology provides a detailed account of the TNE experience that is rare in the literature. The study adds support to the contention that the acknowledgement of cultural distance, rather than the adoption of a universalist mindset, is a precondition for development of intercultural competence through transnational teaching. The reflections of the respondents indicate that when transnational educators are prepared to learn from the ambiguity encountered during offshore teaching, they have the capacity to experience personal growth and to add significantly to their university's human capital. The paper argues that this 'preparedness' to learn should not be left to chance lest it does not eventuate and that the responsibility for development is shared between transnational educators, who must be open to change and prepared to engage in self-reflection that can be confronting, and universities, who must formally recognise the need to provide time, resources and quality, ethical learning interventions in order to facilitate the development of intercultural competence in all staff, especially those who teach overseas.

The project responded to the critical need to focus on improving teaching in [Next] Generation Learning Spaces, since billions of dollars have been spent on designing or retrofitting these spaces. Next Generation Learning Spaces are specifically designed to increase active learning and to support a more student-centred approach to teaching and learning. While these spaces vary in their exact characteristics, they typically are: carefully planned to facilitate interactions between students and promote active learning; designed to allow for flexible use and arrangement of furniture; constructed without a lectern or single whiteboard/screen at the front of the space to enable teaching from anywhere in the room; and technology-enabled to encourage active, connected and collaborative learning. Despite considerable investment, there is evidence that their full potential has not yet been fully realised. Additionally, there is limited evidence that current approaches to professional development for academic staff teaching in these spaces are effective. The project has made a difference in a number of ways. It has contributed to the substantive body of literature on how to engage academic staff in professional learning to enhance their teaching. It has identified why current practice is not working and proposed a way forward. Over 200 academic staff at RMIT found the professional learning activities useful and indicated that they would trial a change to their teaching as a result. The project has supported a change in the way universities involved in the trials will provide professional learning for academic staff teaching in New Generation Learning Spaces using the innovative and an alternative approach to traditional professional development.

In Victoria, Australia teachers' aides (TAs) are employed to provide support to students with disabilities in accessing their education. The role of the TAs varies within and across school settings. Drawing from the findings of a quantitative study, the purpose of this paper is to develop an understanding of teachers' aides' perceptions of their preparedness to perform 18 student-related tasks within the state secondary school setting in Victoria, Australia. In all, 163 participants completed the on-line questionnaire. The results of the study showed that that in general TAs perceive there are tasks relevant to their roles in supporting students with disabilities; and there are tasks that are not applicable to that role. The TAs in this study considered that they had training that enabled them to effectively perform the listed student related tasks to support students with disabilities in the secondary school environment.
