Young women often limit their career choices through misconceptions about their abilities or the type of work that women are supposed to be suited for. Many people see TAFE colleges as predominantly male, trade oriented places of learning. This video is designed to address these misunderstandings by giving a clear picture of Victoria's modern TAFE colleges and the large number of different courses they offer. Young women who are current TAFE students from a wide range of courses and colleges give their honest opinions on: what it's like to be a TAFE student; the sort of learning environment TAFE offers; whether TAFE courses are relevant for gaining employment skills; how TAFE offers training in practical skills; the sort of social life TAFE students have; what TAFE courses can lead on to; and where you can get further information about TAFE.

Perkins IV mandates improvements in the participation and completion of secondary career and technical education (CTE) students pursuing nontraditional Programs of Study (POS). The directives are among pressures placed upon CTE leaders from stakeholders. Perkins IV legislation affects CTE leaders whose schools receive federal funding under Perkins IV. Exploring the attitudes of experienced career and technical educators regarding the participation of girls in nontraditional CTE programs may inform an understanding of the conditions supporting or inhibiting the participation of girls pursuing nontraditional POS. The two components of the research included a pilot survey of 48 career and technical educators from Southeastern, PA (SEPA), and a Delphi panel of 20 individuals including those with experience or expertise in CTE, the career development of girls, or nontraditional student issues. The Delphi panel represented 10 states and the District of Columbia. The Delphi panel included CTE educators from SEPA, tying the two study components together.
The exploration of career and technical educator attitudes makes the study unique. The central question was how does the lack of understanding about educator attitudes toward educational and gender equity limit the development of equitable nontraditional programming and response strategies? The issue of girls pursuing nontraditional POS is complex. The findings identified factors related to the participation of girls in nontraditional POS and suggested solutions to challenges related to the participation and completion of girls. Four themes emerged including educator bias, supporting girls, systemic issues in CTE, and state and national issues. Strategies were identified.

Hawaii's Women in Technology Program has demonstrated to local employers and unions how simple marketing strategies greatly enhance the number of qualified female applicants organizations can draw. This paper looks at the ways engineering and construction corporations typically market their job openings and the correspondingly low rate of female applicants who respond. [The authors] will then demonstrate increases in female applicants when organizations employ marketing strategies targeted directly to women for non-traditional occupation employment. Finally, [the authors] will provide a list of proven techniques to help corporations market construction and engineering jobs and apprenticeship programs to women.

This report presents findings from a study of gender segregation in apprenticeships in England. The study is part of research undertaken for the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) investigation into gender segregation in the construction, engineering, plumbing, information technology (IT), and childcare sectors. The report explores what employers and young people perceive as the barriers and opportunities to pursuing careers in non-traditional occupations. The research was conducted during the first half of 2004 and focused on apprenticeships. The research aimed to: explore how far employers and young people are aware of gender segregation in occupations and whether they believe it to be a problem; identify the costs and benefits to young people of pursuing careers in nontraditional occupations; explore what employers and young people think are the opportunities and barriers to pursuing training and careers in non-traditional occupations; identify what would help employers and young people to make non-stereotypical choices; and provide evidence and information for change in policies and practices. Key findings include: the majority of employers interviewed believed that recruiting more young people of the non-traditional sex into their sectors would help solve skills shortages; 80% of girls and 55% of boys said they would or might be willing to learn to do a non-traditional job; and 81% of girls and 58% of boys said that both males and females could be equally good at plumbing. The findings indicate interest from young people in non-traditional work and from employers in creating a better gender mix than the current situation. Although this suggests an openness to change, the research also reveals a wide range of barriers to widening choices in practice. The report recommends a holistic and co-ordinated approach to policy formation that takes into account the various roles currently played by schools, providers and other organisations. Show less

Background: The stereotypical image of a scientist has negative consequences in terms of promoting a perception of scientists and relevant careers that is both positive and realistic. Material and methods: This study employs a modified Draw a Scientist Test (DAST) to investigate the perceptions held by post-primary school students in Ireland about scientists and their work. Participants completed the DAST before and after partaking in a Career Orientation Programme that aimed to promote careers in science and portray scientists and their working life realistically. Results: After completing the programme, participants' drawings were less stereotypical, with fewer images of male scientist working alone. Conclusions: Drawings also reflected activities the participants did throughout the programme, suggesting that first-hand experience can broaden perceptions of scientific careers.

The theme for this year’s conference was ‘Vocational education and training systems, what works and why’ and the program was structured around four topics: VET systems; VET in developing countries; VET and economic and social development; and VET and special needs groups. This paper [part of the third topic] investigates non-traditional occupations (NTOs) and employment for women, exploring failures, successes and remaining barriers for women in the workplace; specifically those barriers that have remained impervious to the idea that this area of employment has the potential to promote economic independence and equality of opportunities for women.

Composed of segments in which members of different sections of the construction industry discuss the increasing participation of women, the positive impact of that participation, and the overall suitability of that participation. Speakers include: representatives from unions, employers' organisations, and group training schemes; projects managers; construction company managers; and female and male construction workers. The 'brute strength requirement' stereotype is debunked. A running theme is that the construction industry relies on good management, and good management is reflected in encouraging the participation of women. Scenes set on building sites.

In this report, [the authors provide an] inclusive understanding of military-connected undergraduates by using U.S. Department of Education data, from the 2011-12 academic year, to disaggregate various military personnel (i.e., members of the National Guard, reservists, and active duty personnel) from veterans to examine points of difference on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, as well as on key factors associated with college enrollment, persistence, and completion. In doing so, [the authors] provide three key takeaways: (1) America's military-connected undergraduates are diverse along demographic and economic lines; (2) A vast majority of military-connected students applied for and received financial aid. However, the sources of financial aid (i.e., loans, grants, VA/DoD [Veterans Affairs/Department of Defense benefits]) varied by military background and not all use VA/DoD education benefits; and (3) A large share of military-connected undergraduates face life circumstances that research shows are associated with postsecondary non-completion.

The underrepresentation of women in engineering is well known and unresolved. However, Turkey has witnessed a shift in trend from virtually no female participation in engineering to across-the-board proportions that dominate other industrialised countries within the 76 years of the founding of the Turkish Republic. This paper describes the largest known direct cross-sectional study of women in engineering in Turkey with over 800 participants. The methods include survey and facilitated focus groups. The study shows that women in Turkey choose engineering mainly because they enjoy the underlying mathematics and science. There is no gender bias on the part of teachers or fellow students; however, women students believe that they have fewer opportunities than male peers and acutely feel the lack of role models. Working professionals in industry or government perceive that women assume a more indirect, supporting role; however, women overall strongly affirm their selection of engineering despite some negative factors.
