This 'At a glance' looks at whether graduate programs - a type of employment program targeted at recent graduates - are feasible for vocational education and training (VET) students. These programs are more common in higher education but could have the potential to improve the number of VET students employed in their intended occupation after training. However, to improve their uptake, the benefits of employing recent graduates need to be promoted to employers. It also touches on work-integrated learning to improve the work experience of VET students.

This report summarises the most recent research for young people up to 24 years of age with the aim of providing a clear picture of young people's participation in vocational education and training (VET) and the impact and role of VET on their transitions to work. Using longitudinal research findings where possible, it seeks to answer the following questions: (1) How important is VET for young people? (2) Is VET helping the transition from school to work? (3) What factors impact on the employment outcomes that result from VET? The statistics indicate that VET is clearly an important pathway for young people, and could also benefit the 'at risk' group who experience multiple or prolonged periods of unemployment. However, until now, researchers have lacked an accurate understanding of the role VET plays in assisting the transition to work for young people. The difficulty in researching transitions and outcomes for young people is due to the individual and complex nature of their pathways from school to the workplace or further study. By tracking young people, researchers are now able to conclude that VET does assist the transition to work, although the smoothness of this transition does vary depending on student demographics and the nature of the VET program undertaken. Students undertaking certificates 1 and II may not, in the short term, attain the jobs they hoped for without further study. Career development services can have a positive impact on transitions by better informing prospective students of the typical outcomes and further study required after completing particular VET courses. Over the past decade, the Australian vocational education and training (VET) sector has focused on the outcomes of training in terms of qualifications and competencies. Until this time there had been little information available on the value that employers place on qualifications and how they use them to contribute to the success of their business. This report synthesises recent research, which shows that employers do value qualifications, and see them as having three main benefits: to 'screen' candidates in the recruitment process; to meet compliance requirements; and to provide career development for existing workers. However, VET providers could encourage employers to view qualifications more favourably by linking them to skills required at work and by keeping costs down, especially of the assessment process. There has been a strong shift in what research and practice tells us is good teaching and learning in vocational education and training (VET). Making this shift can be a substantial challenge for some VET teachers but many are now moving to facilitating learning through effective teaching. This publication examines teaching and learning in the VET context. Good teaching is now understood to involve a process of facilitating learning rather than being the simple transmission of knowledge from the teacher to the learner. Learning can be considered as comprising a number of different forms including, for example, formal learning, informal learning, incidental learning, problem-based learning and situated learning. Useful strategies and models are included in this publication. The major conclusion of this publication is that contemporary education and training has moved from being almost entirely instructor- and provider-controlled to being a process where learners are expected to be and are much more likely to be involved in planning what is to be learned, how and when, and how the learning will be assessed. Substantial changes such as these may involve changes in the ways some practitioners have traditionally delivered VET, and may mean developing new resources, learning and assessment methods. This may involve for practitioners significant rethinking about their VET practice. Show less

This publication is intended to disseminate, in a easily accessible format, the findings and outcomes of the most comprehensive research ever undertaken into Australia's apprenticeship system. The development of the apprenticeship system in Australia is briefly reviewed (including the introduction of traineeships and New Apprenticeships), completions and attrition discussed, and outcomes in terms of employment and career prospects are looked at. Policy implications of the research are identified, future directions suggested, and the publication finishes by giving an overview of eleven research studies, nine funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) through the National Research and Evaluation Committee (NREC), and two carried out by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER).
This booklet is part of a series of publications on apprenticeships, now available in print and on the Internet. 'Australian apprenticeships: research readings' (available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 65.04) and 'Australian apprenticeships: facts, fiction and the future' (available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 65.06) are complementary volumes which are briefly summarised here.
