The Skills and Labour Market Research Unit (SLMRU) within [Foras Aiseanna Saothair] FAS was set up to investigate the supply and demand of skills in the Irish economy. [This report] is an attempt to examine the supply and demand of healthcare skills in Ireland. The report focuses on skilled healthcare occupations and examines the supply and demand trends of almost 30 occupations in the healthcare sector. The report contains details of the employment structure in each occupation including gender, numbers employed, and employment growth. This information is used to give a description of both the historical and current status of the occupations. The report also includes an analysis of a number of variables which may be regarded as indicators of shortage. These variables include immigration and vacancy data. This data, combined with the data on employment trends, provides an indicator of the current level of demand for each occupation. The report presents an overview of the current education provision for healthcare occupations and how it has evolved. It includes information on the numbers who enrol and graduate from education programmes in healthcare disciplines. This information, combined with estimates on the numbers of students who do not complete their education and the number of graduates who do not work in the healthcare sector in Ireland after graduation, is used to forecast future supply. The report also contains forecasts of the demand for healthcare professionals.

This bulletin is the fourth annual report by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) examining skills and occupational trends in Ireland. The bulletin outlines key labour market trends in order to assist policy formulation in the areas of employment, education and training, and immigration. It also aims to provide information relating to developments in the Irish labour market for students, career guidance advisors, and other interested parties. The statistical analysis covers the period 2002-2007, which is the most recent detailed quantitative occupational information available. For each occupation covered in the bulletin, key statistics relating to the supply and demand of skills are examined, including its employment profile and recent employment trends. The bulletin has two main purposes; to provide a statistical record of the employment data for all main occupations in the economy and to draw on this data, and other qualitative information, to identify any shortages.

This bulletin is the third annual report by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) on skills and occupational trends in Ireland. The objective of the bulletin is to outline key labour market statistics in order to assist policy formulation in the areas of employment, education and training, and immigration. It also aims to provide information for students, career guidance advisors, and other interested parties relating to developments in the Irish labour market. The main focus of the bulletin is the analysis of employment at occupational level for the period 2001-2006.
The bulletin is set out as follows: section one provides an overview of general labour market trends; section two discusses sectoral employment trends, including recent and expected future employment trends; section three examines employment by broad occupation; section four focuses on the supply of skills from education and training providers, both public and private; section five provides an overview of the new employment schemes for non-[European Union] EU workers; section six examines vacancies by broad occupational group from a number of sources; section seven provides an analysis of 130 occupations categorised into 17 occupational groups and highlights areas of shortage; and section eight examines the employment profile of females working in Ireland.
