Successfully motivating and retaining health workers is critical for the effective performance of health systems. In Mozambique, a shortage of health care professionals and low levels of staff motivation in rural and remote areas pose challenges to the provision of equitable health care delivery. This study provides quantitative information on the job preferences of non-physician health professionals in Mozambique, examining how different aspects of jobs are valued and how health professionals might respond to policy options that would post them to district hospitals in rural areas.

SKILL-UP Programme is a joint effort of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs aimed to help the ILO Member States enhance their skills systems to take advantage of new opportunities offered by emerging global drivers of change relating to increased digitalization, international trade integration, technological change, large international migration flows, climate change, and demographics, among others. The SKILL-UP country projects are located in Ghana, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Malawi, Senegal and Tanzania.

Skill-UP Ghana aims to move the [technical and vocational education and training] TVET system from a supply to a demand-driven system by building on existing structures and strengthening institutional resources to promote a better understanding of the skills demanded in economic sectors. Tourism and hospitality is a critical sector for the Ghanaian economy; in terms of the number of people employed in the sector, its role to meet local demand and its export potential. The definition of the tourism and hospitality sector is the provision of tourism and hospitality services to domestic and international tourists and visitors. It encompasses: accommodation; food and beverage; attractions; creative arts and transport. Skills mismatch and shortages are a common challenge. In response, the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) in collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has established Sector Skills Bodies (SSBs) for the agriculture, construction and tourism and hospitality sectors with the aim of establishing a demand-led TVET system in these sectors. To support their establishment, the ILO worked with the SSBs to develop sector skills strategies through applying ILO's Skills for Trade and Economic Diversification (STED) approach in order to better align skills development to labour market needs. This document sets out that strategy and outlines a range of proposed actions to address the skill needs of the tourism and hospitality sector identified through the process by the SSB members.

Ghana's oil and gas sector is a key driver for the national economy in terms of attracting foreign investments and creating employment opportunities. It is regarded as a catalyst to move the country into the upper-middle income category. A skilled and productive workforce is needed to maximize this potential. However, evidence suggests that the sector lacks essential skills in a variety of occupational areas. In general, the oil and gas sector demands specialized skills and one of the major problems facing Ghana's petroleum industry is a shortage of skilled labour, especially engineers, drillers and production operation workers. Evidence from the sector shows that occupations with specialized technical tasks, such as geoscientist, petroleum engineers, and drillers, need years of formal education, training and industry experience.

In response to this challenge, countries have been adopting a demand-driven skills development approach that aims to provide individuals with the current and future skills required by the labour market through more effective linkages between technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions and the labour market. As part of this approach, the ILO supported the Ghanaian Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) in applying ILO's Skills for Trade and Economic Diversification (STED) method in order to better align skills development to labour market needs. This document defines a skills strategy for the oil and gas sector and its accompanying action plan, and was developed with the Oil and Gas Sector Skills Body members.

South Africa is currently experiencing a shortage of an estimated 70,000 plus information and communication technology (ICT) professionals, which is compounded by the fact that the number of ICT graduates is now showing a decline. At an organisational level, the effective use of ICT for organisational information management is difficult without having appropriately ICT-skilled (e-skilled) employees. The shortage of e-skills in South Africa and much of Africa forces companies to work at retaining their existing e-skilled professionals, but this task is becoming increasingly difficult. Thus, this study established the objective to explore the factors that contribute to the retention of skilled ICT professionals in one international consulting organisation in South Africa, which also might bear relevance to other similar organisations operating in many other African countries.

Buildings can be further classified into residential and non-residential and infrastructure into transport, agriculture and water/sanitation categories. The value chain consists of developers and planners; built environment professionals; built environment contractors and end-users. Skills mismatch and shortages are a common challenge.
