The author begins by describing the theoretical framework for the study. She gives her definitions of ‘knowledge’ and ‘learning’ and reports on how knowledge becomes meaningful in professional practice across four different professions. The research was conducted with the help of social workers, lawyers, adult educators and nurses and the questions examined were: (1) what makes knowledge meaningful in the context of professional practice?; and (2) how is the construction of knowledge affected by the different frames (structural, political, human relations, symbolic) of the context in which professionals practice? Daley describes the methodology of data collection and analysis, gives case study examples and identifies the implications for practice and research in adult education.
