This chapter discusses one of the possible ingredients of a career guidance programme by focusing on career mentoring programmes which involve an employer or working person. It examines what mentoring is, how it works, the strength of the evidence supporting it and how it might be best organised within a wider programme of career support for young people. The chapter focuses on relationships between employers/working people and young people in schools, primarily for the purposes of career development. It argues that mentoring supports psycho-social self-work, fosters learning and the development of personal competence and enables the development of social and cultural capital. The chapter proposes a theoretical explanation for the impacts of employer mentoring, arguing that employer mentoring supports psycho-social self-work, fosters learning and the development of personal competence and enables the development of social and cultural capital evidence base.
