Broadcast is a quarterly publication produced by the Scottish Further Education Unit (SFEU). It aims to provide a forum for viewpoints across the further education (FE) sector in Scotland and to highlight current news on national initiatives. This issue contains the following vocational education and training (VET) related articles: ‘Skills for business - driving productivity with the Sector Skills Development Agency’ by Aileen Ponton and Jacqui Hepburn (p. 24-25) which outlines the role played by the UK-wide, employer-led, Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) which aim to reduce skills shortages, improve productivity, and increase opportunities for skill development and further education; ‘Shared approach to tackling literacy’ by Jim Maguire (p. 28-29) which describes a collaboration by several colleges that aimed to emphasise the importance of adult literacy and numeracy, particularly as they apply to the workplace, and which was found to be successful; ‘The hidden curriculum - intangible barriers to articulation between further and higher education’ by Eric Massie (p. 40-41) which discusses the transitions many students make from further education colleges to universities, and some of the difficulties they can have in making the adjustment to quite a different type of educational system; ‘Pass marks for virtual exams’ by Martyn Ware and Linda Steedman (p. 19-21) which explores some of the issues and problems relating to computer-based assessment, a system that often co-exists with computer-based learning, especially in the corporate training industry.
