Steve Davis interviews a collection of presenters from two panel discussions at the 29th National Vocational Education and Training Research Conference 'No Frills', held on 7-10 July 2020. Steve Davis interviews a collection of presenters from the 32nd National VET Research Conference 'No Frills', held on 19-21 July 2023 in Melbourne. In the past few years, the vocational education and training (VET) sector has faced rapid socioeconomic, demographic and technological change. When unforeseen events such as [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 emerged, the sector quickly adapted by upskilling workplaces, training organisations and VET trainers in digital and remote work methods. In this 30 minute podcast, Steve Davis talks with Tom Karmel, Erica Smith and Damian Oliver on insights from research into apprenticeships. Interested in the story behind the numbers, Tom discusses the findings from his work on individual completion rates that show occupation and employers' size matters, with the implication being that the relationship between employer and apprentice is critical. Erica talks about the all too often unspoken expectations of apprentices and employers: the psychological contract. She finds that writing down these expectations at the start of an apprenticeship does help all parties. Damian examines whether pre-apprenticeship programs deliver on their promise of improved retention rates and finds their impact varies by occupation and prior education level. Implications for policy-makers and training providers are drawn out throughout the podcast. Show less

Skills and jobs in demand in workplaces have changed considerably as a result of major global trends, of rapid technological innovation, and increasing global trade. How employers' have used training to prepare their workforces over the last decade can give clues to how to meet the evolution of training into the future. This panel session will explore recent NCVER evidence on the role of employers in training, what influences employers to train, the continuity and change in the training employers are using, and use of skill sets. It will touch on the role of skill sets in enabling lifelong learning and how this might shape the form of future training. The discussion will draw out the nexus between the employer, what they want and the forms of training that have met this.

What makes for effective partnerships between employers and RTOs?

A recent study, 'Continuity and change: employers' training practices and partnerships with training providers' [indexed in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 127.03], by researchers from Federation University and the University of Queensland looked into current practices in employer training in Australia. The national study focused on employers' use of nationally recognised training and the role of partnerships between employers and registered training organisations (RTOs). With increasing complexity in the external environment, training staff have become more proactive within their firms. This increasing complexity of the vocational education and training (VET) system has also led to the advent of VET system navigators within RTOs, who act as guides to employers. In this webinar, the lead researchers and spokespeople from partnerships researched in the project will talk about the key findings and what makes for successful long-term partnerships.
Kaye and Adam will talk about the partnership between Australian Paper and Federation Training. The partnership involves the delivery of skill set Emergency Response Training to employees of Australian Paper, a pulp and paper mill in Gippsland, Victoria. Graham and Chris will talk about the partnership established between Elders Australia and Wodonga Institute of TAFE. The partnership involves the delivery of a customised version of the Certificate IV in Agriculture to new and existing stock and station agents employed by Elders across Australia.
