Unless stated otherwise, data is derived using the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection no.96, (June 2018 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.

Due to lags in processing, the most recent figures are estimated (for training activity from September quarter 2016 to March quarter 2018). The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers, based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. Whereas non-estimated data reflects the actual data submitted by each jurisdiction which is also subject to change. There were 272,440 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 March 2018, a decrease of 1.2 per cent from 31 March 2017. In the March quarter 2018, compared with the March quarter 2017: commencements increased by 1.5 per cent, to 56,015; completions decreased by 9.0 per cent, to 22,425; cancellations and withdrawals increased by 4.0 per cent, to 23,980. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2018, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2017: commencements decreased by 0.9 per cent, to 164,150; completions decreased by 4.6 per cent, to 92,130; cancellations and withdrawals increased by 0.4 per cent, to 92,765.

There were 266,565 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2020, a decrease of 3.9 per cent from 30 June 2019. In the June quarter 2020, compared with the June quarter 2019: commencements decreased by 35.8 per cent, to 21,115; completions decreased by 24.4 per cent, to 14,820; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 28.7 per cent, to 15,120. In the 12 months ending 30 June 2020, compared with the 12 months ending 30 June 2019: commencements decreased by 14.2 per cent, to 133,505; completions decreased by 5.7 per cent, to 83,965; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 9.4 per cent, to 77,835.

This leaflet offers a brief summary of information relevant to the Australian Capital Territory gained from the national survey of TAFE students who completed their courses and graduated with a qualification from a course of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions.

There were 259,385 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 December 2018, a decrease of 1.0 per cent from 31 December 2017. In the December quarter 2018, compared with the December quarter 2017: commencements decreased by 4.1 per cent, to 33,760; completions increased by 9.5 per cent, to 26,780; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 2.4 per cent, to 21,525. In the 12 months ending 31 December 2018, compared with the 12 months ending 31 December 2017: commencements decreased by 3.7 per cent, to 156,950; completions decreased by 5.5 per cent, to 88,865; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 0.3 per cent, to 89,485.

This publication presents a summary of information gained from the national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 2000 at a TAFE institute in Australia. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Graduates were those students who completed their course during 2000 and graduated with a qualification. Module completer information was collected on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions. The figure reflects the number of active contracts at a given point in time (at the end of the quarter), and therefore in-training figures cannot be cumulated over time. For this reason, quarterly comparisons are equivalent to 12-months ending comparisons, as they both represent the changes as at 30 September from one year to the next.

In Australia, there were 402,245 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2022, an increase of 14.0 per cent from 30 September 2021. In the September quarter 2022, compared with the September quarter 2021: commencements decreased by 41.3 per cent, to 29,420; completions increased by 33.4 per cent, to 24,655; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 28.1 per cent, to 32,950. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2021: commencements increased by 6.1 per cent, to 254,700; completions increased by 20.9 per cent, to 95,300; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 34.3 per cent, to 127,510.

In the March quarter 2021, compared with the March quarter 2020: commencements increased by 35.4 per cent, to 66,635; completions decreased by 9.4 per cent, to 20,010; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 5 per cent, to 22,140. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2021, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2020: commencements increased by 28.5 per cent, to 186,745; completions decreased by 16.8 per cent, to 73,780; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 12.4 per cent, to 73,255.

This report presents a component of the results from the 1999 national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1998 which relates specifically to the Australian Capital Territory. This is the first survey of its type, and covers both TAFE graduates and TAFE students who have successfully completed some training and left the TAFE system (module completers). Included with the report are appendices containing explanatory notes, a glossary, a brochure, covering letters and questionnaires.
