This publication presents preliminary figures for the number of students, subject enrolments, hours of delivery, full-year training equivalents and qualifications relating to Australia’s public vocational education and training (VET) system for 2011. As the figures are preliminary, they may be subject to change as further processing of the data is undertaken. Final data, with more detail and a wider range of variables, are expected to be released in early July 2012. Highlights include: there were 1.9 million students enrolled in the public VET system in 2011, an increase of 4.6 per cent since 2010; student numbers increased in all states and territories except Tasmania in 2011 with the largest increases in Victoria (14.8 per cent), Northern Territory (1.5 per cent) and Western Australia (1.1 per cent); in numerical terms, the greatest increases in student numbers occurred in Victoria (77,000 additional students), New South Wales (3500 additional students) and Queensland (additional 2800 students); nationally, there was an 8.6 per cent increase for both hours of delivery and full-year training equivalents in 2011; students undertaking Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications increased by 9.2 per cent nationally in 2011; in numerical terms, increases were greatest in certificate III (54,900 additional students), certificate IV (51,900 additional students) and diploma qualifications (28,400 additional students). This publication presents estimates of apprentice and trainee activity in Australia for the September quarter 2011. An apprentice or trainee is a person undertaking vocational training through a contracted training arrangement. The figures in this publication are derived from the National Apprentice and Trainee Collection no. 70 (December 2011 estimates). The most recent figures in this publication are estimated (those for training activity from the March quarter 2010 to the September quarter 2011). Estimates take into account reporting lags that occur at the time of data collection. Consequently, the figures in this publication may differ from those published in earlier or later reports. Highlights of this report include: there were 461,200 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2011, an increase of 3.2 per cent from the previous year; in the 12 months to 30 September 2011, compared with the previous year, commencements increased by 4.7 per cent, to 319,000, completions increased by 6.1 per cent, to 176,100, and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 8.8 per cent, to 139,300; for seasonally adjusted data, comparing the September quarter 2011 with the June quarter 2011, commencements in trades occupations increased by 1.5 per cent, commencements in non-trades occupations decreased slightly, completions increased by 2.2 per cent, cancellations and withdrawals increased by 1.5 per cent, and in-training numbers increased slightly.
