The support materials for agricultural training (SMAT) units have been designed to assist farmers and other agricultural workers to improve their numeracy and literacy skills in order to make their farms and work more efficient and productive. The workbooks use tasks from everyday working contexts such as keeping records for tax purposes; dealing with banks, suppliers and customers; accessing and applying information; and negotiating. Students can work independently or with the assistance of rural skills teachers and/or adult literacy teachers, and need not complete all units. In each of the four streams, there are three skill levels, and in each level, there is a numeracy and literacy/communication unit.
