This leaflet offers a brief summary of information relevant to the Australian Capital Territory gained from the national survey of TAFE students who completed their courses and graduated with a qualification from a course of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions.

This publication presents a summary of information gained from the national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 2000 at a TAFE institute in Tasmania. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Graduates were those students who completed their course during 2000 and graduated with a qualification. Module completer information was collected on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions. This document contains a summary of the data collected and a brief look at some of the findings from analysis of these data.

This document is one of a series of industry training monographs designed to provide readers with an overview of occupational trends and the current training effort in each industry in Australia.
The retailing sector is the largest single industry of employment in Australia. It is characterised by high levels of part-time and casual employment, a young workforce, and employment that is widely distributed geographically. It is often regarded as a ‘vestibule’ industry, providing the entry point into the broader labour market, because while it is the sector that provides the first employment experience to many young people, it is not seen as a long term employment option by many of those who start in the sector. Given the geographical range of the industry, its internal diversity and its high proportion of short-term employment, there is not big expenditure on training, and in this sector training receives very little government support.

'Partners in a learning culture' (indexed at TD/TNC 63.292) is a five-year (2000-2005) national strategy which aims to link improvements in vocational education and training (VET) provision for Indigenous peoples to improved employment and community development outcomes. The strategy is supported by a blueprint for implementation (indexed at TD/TNC 62.913) which also specifies 25 performance measures for monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of the overall strategy. As part of the implementation of the blueprint initiative, Ministers agreed to a mid-term review seeking qualitative and quantitative evidence of activity and outcomes, both from those implementing actions as well as Indigenous learners either already in the VET system or wishing to access the system. This review was undertaken in two phases. Phase one involved a survey of the agencies that are signatories to the blueprint, interviews and focus groups with stakeholders, and an analysis of statistical information about the participation of Indigenous people in VET. The research from this first phase is reported in two 'stand-alone' documents: a stakeholder consultation report; and a statistical analysis report. This document is the stakeholder consultation report from the first phase. It reflects the views of those agencies that have been assigned specific responsibilities for implementing the blueprint. The findings indicate that the overall vision and the four objectives of the strategy remain relevant and overall progress is satisfactory, with some significant achievements. These include: 62% of the individual actions which the partner agencies committed to take are in progress or completed; ANTA, the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) and most State Training Authorities have established, or are in the process of establishing, system-level mechanisms for ongoing Indigenous advice and direction to guide the VET system’s response to the needs and aspirations of Indigenous peoples; and the Australian Indigenous Training Advisory Council (AITAC) is developing increasing capacity to advise the ANTA Board on Indigenous VET issues within the system and beyond.

This paper presents some thoughts on the concept of the Tasmanian Polytechnic, drawing on a range of research mostly undertaken by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). It first considers a number of 'goals' that are clearly relevant to judging the success of the endeavour: Year 12 retention (or its equivalent); the completion of Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualifications; university entrance; transition to the workforce; and 'second chancers'.
