Ways in which the professional development needs of vocational and academic teachers who intend to or are now engaged in school-to-work transition activities are met, are described in this document. In the first section, thirteen professional development themes are presented. Collectively they reflect the comprehensive nature of professional development for school-to-work transition. In the second section, ways to provide school-to-work related professional development to teachers are discussed. Several suggestions for using professional development to help teachers prepare for the school-to-work responsibilities are offered. Show less

This report outlines several reasons why the college preparatory potential of school-to-work programs, originally designed for students not intending to go to college, should be considered. It describes the characteristics of school-to-work programs in the USA, presents some examples of school-to-work programs that have been successful in teaching academic skills and preparing students for college, and outlines empirical evidence to support the argument that these programs are able to function as college preparatory programs. A review of college admissions processes and strategies to assist school-to-work students gain admission to selective colleges, supports the suggestion that for school-to-work to succeed as a college preparatory program there need to be significant changes in both assessment and college admission procedures. This report draws on case study and survey data to describe the characteristics of teaching and learning in work-based learning (WBL) and to identify how the work context supports, or hinders, both. This study has two main objectives. The first objective is to understand the workplace as a learning environment for students. It specifically focuses on the social means by which work tasks are established and accomplished. It looks at teaching at work, at who does it and how the community supports teaching and learning. The second objective is to understand what students learn from WBL, including technical, generic, social skills and work-related attitudes. The study asks what opportunities are presented for learning different skills or attitudes and what students appear to learn from these opportunities. Show less

This document is intended to assist adult educators in designing and adapting curricula to conform to technological changes in the workplace and to meet the learning needs of adults. The first part deals with the changing workplace and its effects on postsecondary education and with developing programs that respond to change (responses to technological change, strategies for identifying emerging skills, and steps for creating successful high technology programs). The second part consists of six chapters that detail the following stages in the curriculum development process: assessing needs, defining objectives, identifying resources, developing curricular content, implementing a curriculum, and monitoring and evaluating the implementation. Appendixes include descriptions of exemplary high technology programs and curriculum guidelines and specifications for computer-assisted design, computer-assisted manufacturing, and robotics programs.
