This document is one of a series of industry training monographs designed to provide readers with an overview of occupational trends and the current training effort in each industry in Australia.

The accommodation, cafes and restaurants industry in Australia, representing more than half of Australia's tourism and hospitality related employment, accounts for some 4.5 per cent of all jobs in Australia. It has been one of the fastest growing areas of employment over the last decade. The industry employs more females than males, is a significant source of casual and part time jobs, and has the lowest labour costs of any sector and the lowest expenditure on structured training of all industry sectors in Australia. However apprenticeships and traineeships in the industry have grown strongly over the last three years and it has become the fifth largest industry employing apprentices and trainees.

This report contains the results for Victoria from the 1998 Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Graduate Destination Survey (GDS), conducted by ACNielsen Research on behalf of the National Centre For Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

Nationally, the survey involved sending a questionnaire to all graduates (120,775) at publicly-funded TAFE institutes in Australia in 1997 who completed a Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration and had an Australian address as their usual address. A total of 66,607 graduates responded, a national response rate of 55.2 per cent. Of the graduates sent a questionnaire, 24,156 were from Victoria and 13.305 responded, a response rate of 55.1 per cent.

The aim of the 1998 TAFE GDS was to measure vocational education and training (VET) graduates' employment outcomes, further study destinations and opinions of courses completed. It provides national, state and institute level data to support the National VET Strategy and information to assist in administration, planning and evaluation.

One of a series of monographs designed to provide readers with a summary of occupational trends and the current training effort in each industry in Australia, this overview summarises what has happened to all industries within Australia. It addresses recent employment trends, recent occupational trends in key areas, and current training arrangements, particularly training levels and outputs. Economic and labour market changes since 1987 are reviewed and training in Australia analysed. The document brings together for the first time a range of survey data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), as well as graduate destination, employer satisfaction with training and other training data compiled for the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). It is intended for industry decision-makers, policy makers, teachers and trainers, researchers and students with an interest in vocational education and training (VET).

The 17 individual monographs in this series are entered into VOCEDplus from TD/TNC 55.12 to TD/TNC 55.28, and have also been collected into one volume, ‘Outlook for training in Australia’s industries’, TD/TNC 55.06. Show less

This publication is designed to give an overview of participation in vocational education and training in Australia by students with disabilities. The data are taken from the 1996 national vocational education and training data collection maintained by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). The report provides tables and some commentary on students with disabilities, the courses they undertook, and the module outcomes they achieved. This report is the result of a pilot survey conducted concurrently with the TAFE Graduate Destination Survey (GDS), 1997. The pilot aimed to test the feasibility of extending the scope of future graduate destination surveys to include graduates whose contact addresses are overseas. It should be noted that this was not a pilot survey of overseas students who graduated in 1996 but rather a survey of graduates who had an overseas contact address recorded on the mailing lists supplied by the Institutes.

The survey was conducted by Reark Research on behalf of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) for the National Advisory Committee on Vocational Education and Training Statistics (NACVETS). The survey was funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA), and involved sending a questionnaire to 618 graduates who had overseas contact addresses. Of these, 217 responded, a response rate of 35.1 per cent.

Information is presented about the number of clients, country of origin, course enrolments, module enrolments and outcomes, sex, state/territory, age and annual hours of training.

This leaflet offers a brief summary of information relevant to Tasmania gained from the national survey of TAFE students who completed their courses and graduated with a qualification from a course of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions.

This document is one of a series of industry training monographs designed to provide readers with an overview of occupational trends and the current training effort in each industry in Australia.

The construction industry, comprised of housing construction, other non-dwelling building, engineering construction such as roads, and land subdivision, and telecommunications rollouts, accounts for over 7 per cent of total employment in Australia. It is dominated by male, full time employment, and tends to be cyclical. Only about two thirds of the workers in the construction industry are classified as employees reflecting the sub-contracting nature of much work in the industry. This characteristic, combined with the often short duration and uncertain nature of employment, contributes to the industry's relatively poor performance in the provision of industry-based structured training.
