This report is based on a study commissioned by the Western Australian (WA) Department of Training to determine the 'Future training and employment needs of the South West Region' (2001). The study follows on from a previous research project undertaken by the Department and detailed in the report 'South West Region: key drivers impacting upon future vocational education and training needs' (indexed at TD/WA 58.02). This latest study is the first to be completed by the Department as part of its second round of regional training and employment research studies that will provide input into the State Training Strategy. The study found that the South West, while not experiencing the same level of economic growth as was evident in 1997, is still the leading regional contributor to the WA economy and population growth is still high in comparison to all other regions. However, while the region is experiencing growth in some industry sectors it is also coming to terms with the restructuring of the timber industry and the move to deregulate the dairy industry. The report includes an executive summary and gives a regional overview. It identifies the macro drivers, outlines government policy, key industry drivers and training priorities, and includes tables and attachments. Show less

'Training skills jobs' (TSJ) is the Western Australian (WA) Department of Training's bi-monthly magazine. It examines the WA training scene including new developments and initiatives in training. This edition profiles a wide range of services and programs delivered by the Department of Training. These include skills recognition in the area of career change; flexible learning and flexibility in the provision of training services; new research into student retention at Central TAFE; the release of a series of new brochures that will help migrants access training and employment opportunities; and a WorkSmart project in the Greenough Regional Prison.
Other articles include: 'Planning for business online', which outlines the State Training Strategy (STS) website; 'Regional literacy allocation', which discusses the state's newest adult literacy initiative; and 'TAFE Handbook hits the streets', an article on aspects of TAFE education. Training skills jobs (TSJ) is the Western Australian (WA) Department of Training's bi-monthly magazine. It examines the WA training scene including new developments and initiatives in training. This edition includes an article on the launch of 'First Click', a program providing access to groups in society who have been left behind in the adoption of new technologies, and is part of the Information and Communications Technology Strategy (ICT). Another article highlights the Assessment Forum, 'Assessment under the microscope 2001', which provided professional development opportunities to training organisation staff and vocational education and training (VET) providers. Other articles include: 'Skills shortages looming', which discusses how Western Australian employers have been urged to take on apprentices to save the State from a skills shortage in five years time; 'Sector supports new strategy', which talks about the Western Australian Flexible Learning Strategy; 'Traineeships boost prospects for Aboriginal students', which tells how education, training and employment prospects for Aboriginal young people have been boosted with the Aboriginal School Based Traineeship Program. This is a comprehensive action plan to facilitate the implementation of flexible learning within TAFE colleges. It has been jointly developed by the Western Australian (WA) Department of Training, WestOne Services and WA TAFE colleges, and sets out a wide range of current and planned initiatives to be undertaken up to December 2002.
The strategy embraces the opportunity to improve delivery of vocational education and training (VET) through the innovative use of information communication technologies. However, it does not focus exclusively on online learning or technology-related issues. A broad definition of flexible learning has been adopted and the strategy includes initiatives designed to free up the system to enable many delivery options. Show less

The School Leaver Program is a State Government Initiative sponsored by the Department of Training in partnership with the Department of Education - Western Australia. The program is delivered in every region of the state by twelve Joblink projects funded through the State Employment Assistance Strategy (SEAS). The primary focus of the Program is to identify unplaced school leavers and to assist them to make the transition from secondary education to post secondary destinations.
The Program has two delivery stages, the Intentions survey and the Destinations survey. The data in this report identifies the intentions/destinations of those Year 10, 11 and 12 students who participated in the program in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Show less
