In spite of the negative impact of wars on Iraq, sanctions and the current security situation, national and international contributions to develop the basic tools for post-conflict Iraq's recovery and reconstruction are continuing. Education in general and [technical and vocational education and training] TVET in particular, top the agenda for action and three main contributors, UNESCO, UN-HABITAT and the German Government, in cooperation with the Iraqi Government, organised a forum to analyse the current situation and develop a vision of immediate and future action. The forum discussed selected TVET issues, the challenges facing the anticipated re-alignment of the TVET system in Iraq to reduce unemployment among Iraqi youth, a number of international and regional experiences in conflict/post-conflict economies in order to come to a shared vision and better understanding of the main issues related to TVET in Iraq, and a future look to address these issues.

Many initiatives undertaken by businesses and their partners in the area of sustainable development can contribute considerably to the area of education for sustainable development. In particular, sustainable business models resulting in the improvement of the quality of local life, sustainable supply chain management, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and development of local sustainable development initiatives could inform educational practices of business schools, training provided by companies, labour unions, [nongovernment organisations] NGOs and other business-related organisations.

This paper was initially prepared by [the author] for the Norwegian National Commission in Norway and presented at a seminar in November 2002. There are six Education For All (EFA) goals. However, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) does not appear directly in these goals, although it relates most closely to goals three, four and six. In this discussion paper, [the author] examines the potential links between EFA and TVET from a UNESCO perspective. She looks specifically at some potential benefits of linkages when training for survival and development in Southern Africa. The paper has three purposes. Firstly, [the author] outlines the EFA goals. Secondly, she looks at how TVET can contribute to meeting the EFA goals, as stated in the Dakar Framework for Action. And thirdly, she suggests some reasons why TVET might benefit from closer links to EFA.

At the 2005 UNESCO General Conference, member states stressed the importance of skills development for employability and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a crucially important dimension of Education for All (EFA). It is not only necessary for people to be able to read and write; they also need the skills to make a decent and sustainable living. In light of the above and to fulfil its mandate to assist countries to develop and strengthen education for the changing world of work, the UNESCO International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (UNESCO-UNEVOC) undertook numerous activities around the world in 2006-2007 in the areas of vocationalisation of secondary education, formal, non-formal and informal TVET, and vocational content in higher education. They included conferences and seminars, study tours, a cutting edge publications program and much more. All activities aimed to contribute to increased opportunities for productive work, sustainable livelihoods, personal empowerment and socioeconomic development, especially for youth, girls, women and the disadvantaged. UNESCO-UNEVOC set specific result areas to guide its work during 2004-2005: within the context of its overall mission, recent achievements, and the priorities mandated by UNESCO General Conference. The work of the Centre was focused around these result domains: the UNESCO International Experts Meeting on Learning for Work, Citizenship and Sustainability; the Global UNEVOC Network; [technical and vocational education and training] TVET and Education for All; TVET and the world of work; TVET for sustainable development and TVET publications. As a major contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, InWEnt - Capacity Building International, in partnership with the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training hosted an international experts' meeting in Bonn, Germany on 6-7 November 2007. The purpose of the meeting, titled 'Corporate social responsibility and education for sustainable development: advancing the partnership' was to consider examples and strategies for building global capacity for integrating education, training and capacity building Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs in private and public organisations. It also considered how [technical and vocational education and training] TVET systems and institutions can ensure their students enter the workforce with knowledge, skills and aptitudes suitable for working in organisations with a strong CSR orientation. As such, the meeting was a follow-up to an international consultation on 'Education for sustainable development: engaging the corporate sector', also held in Bonn, 23-25 May 2007, and convened by UNESCO-UNEVOC and UNESCO Headquarters Paris, in close partnership with InWEnt and other partners.
