This leaflet offers a brief summary of information relevant to Tasmania gained from students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1998 at a TAFE institute in Australia. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Module completer information was collected for the first time on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions.

Unless stated otherwise, data are derived from the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection (no. 113, September 2022 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.

Due to the delay in time between an event (commencement, completion, etc.) occurring and the reporting of that event to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), NCVER estimates the most recent figures. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. The final counts are those submitted by jurisdictions. Notes: (1) The [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic in Australia has created uncertain times for individuals, business and governments, which have affected apprentice and trainee numbers. Care should be taken when comparing 2020 to 2022 data with data from previous years; and (2) In-training figures represent the number of apprenticeship and traineeship training contracts where the apprentice or trainee is actively training under the terms of their contract, and who have not completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their training, or had their training contract expired without meeting all of the prescribed requirements of their program. The figure reflects the number of active contracts at a given point in time (at the end of the quarter), and therefore in-training figures cannot be cumulated over time. For this reason, quarterly comparisons are equivalent to 12-months ending comparisons, as they both represent the changes as at 30 June from one year to the next.

In Australia, there were 415,240 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2022, an increase of 21.6 per cent from 30 June 2021. In the June quarter 2022, compared with the June quarter 2021: commencements increased by 36.5 per cent, to 66,885; completions increased by 16.6 per cent, to 20,750; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 24.1 per cent, to 32,015. In the 12 months ending 30 June 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 30 June 2021: commencements increased by 22.1 per cent, to 264,320; completions increased by 15.3 per cent, to 88,855; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 39.6 per cent, to 119,805.

There were 272,440 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 March 2018, a decrease of 1.2 per cent from 31 March 2017. In the March quarter 2018, compared with the March quarter 2017: commencements increased by 1.5 per cent, to 56,015; completions decreased by 9.0 per cent, to 22,425; cancellations and withdrawals increased by 4.0 per cent, to 23,980. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2018, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2017: commencements decreased by 0.9 per cent, to 164,150; completions decreased by 4.6 per cent, to 92,130; cancellations and withdrawals increased by 0.4 per cent, to 92,765.

There were 259,930 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 31 December 2019, a decrease of 1.6 per cent from 31 December 2018. In the December quarter 2019, compared with the December quarter 2018: commencements decreased by 14.8 per cent, to 28,570; completions increased by 1.0 per cent, to 26,550; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 3.8 per cent, to 20,080. In the 12 months ending 31 December 2019, compared with the 12 months ending 31 December 2018: commencements decreased by 3.6 per cent, to 151,015; completions increased by 0.1 per cent, to 89,155; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 1.6 per cent, to 85,445.

This report presents a component of the results from the 1999 national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1998 which relates specifically to Tasmania. This is the first survey of its type, and covers both TAFE graduates and TAFE students who have successfully completed some training and left the TAFE system (module completers). Included with the report are appendices containing explanatory notes, a glossary, a brochure, covering letters and questionnaires. The Enterprise and Vocational Education (EVE) division of the then South Australian Department of Employment, Training and Education (DETE) has contracted the National Centre for Vocational Education Research Ltd (NCVER) to undertake a needs analysis for developing and implementing a statewide student destination tracking and monitoring system for South Australian secondary schools. Section 1 provides background to the study and outlines general issues. Section 2 is an 'environmental scan' of current practice and projects. Section 3 presents proposals for a working model. Section 4 briefly describes the factors involved in costing the proposed model. The appendix lists the participants.

There were 264,425 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2020, a decrease of 4.2 per cent from 30 September 2019. In the September quarter 2020, compared with the September quarter 2019: commencements decreased by 23 per cent, to 26,585; completions decreased by 17.2 per cent, to 16,845; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 21.4 per cent, to 16,990. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2020, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2019: commencements decreased by 18.8 per cent, to 126,665; completions decreased by 9.8 per cent, to 80,200; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 14 per cent, to 73,205.

There were 266,565 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2020, a decrease of 3.9 per cent from 30 June 2019. In the June quarter 2020, compared with the June quarter 2019: commencements decreased by 35.8 per cent, to 21,115; completions decreased by 24.4 per cent, to 14,820; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 28.7 per cent, to 15,120. In the 12 months ending 30 June 2020, compared with the 12 months ending 30 June 2019: commencements decreased by 14.2 per cent, to 133,505; completions decreased by 5.7 per cent, to 83,965; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 9.4 per cent, to 77,835.

This report contains the results for Tasmania from the 1998 Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Graduate Destination Survey (GDS), conducted by ACNielsen Research on behalf of the National Centre For Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and funded by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA).

Nationally, the survey involved sending a questionnaire to all graduates (120,775) at publicly-funded TAFE institutes in Australia in 1997 who completed a Certificate, Advanced Certificate, Associate Diploma, Diploma or Advanced Diploma of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration and had an Australian address as their usual address. A total of 66,607 graduates responded, a national response rate of 55.2 per cent. Of the graduates sent a questionnaire, 2046 were from Tasmania and 1180 responded, a response rate of 57.7 per cent.

The aim of the 1998 TAFE GDS was to measure vocational education and training (VET) graduates' employment outcomes, further study destinations and opinions of courses completed. It provides national, state and institute level data to support the National VET Strategy and information to assist in administration, planning and evaluation.
