This publication presents estimates of apprentice and trainee activity in Australia for the September quarter 2010. An apprentice or trainee is a person undertaking vocational training through a contracted training arrangement. Highlights of this report include: in the 12 months to 30 September 2010, compared with the previous year, commencements increased by 14.2 per cent to 305 400, completions increased by 4.5 per cent to 166 100 and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 2.9 per cent to 128 600. There were 448 800 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2010, an increase of 5.1 per cent from one year earlier. Show less

This publication presents estimates of apprentices and trainees activity in Australia for the September quarter 2013. There were 421,400 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2013, a decrease of 14.2 per cent from the previous year. In the September quarter 2013, compared with the previous year: commencements increased by 47.6 per cent, to 71,900; completions decreased by 17.6 per cent, to 35,300; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 22.7 per cent, to 28,800.

This publication presents information on VET in Schools, the vocational education and training (VET) undertaken by school students as part of their senior secondary certificate of education. The VET in Schools arrangement offers two main options: students can undertake school-based apprenticeships and traineeships; or they can take VET subjects and courses as part of their school curriculum (the latter is referred to as 'other VET in Schools programs').
In 2019, there were: 235,800 VET in Schools students; 17,100 school-based apprentices and trainees, representing 7.3 per cent of all VET in Schools students; and 218,700 students undertaking other VET in Schools programs, representing 92.7 per cent of all VET in Schools students. In 2019, compared with 2018, VET in Schools students increased by 2.2 per cent. From 2015 to 2019, VET in Schools students decreased by 8.3 per cent.

This publication provides a snapshot of apprenticeships and traineeships across Australia. It presents statistics on contract commencements, completions, cancellations and withdrawals as well as contracts currently in training. Unless stated otherwise, data are derived from the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection (no. 117, September 2023 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.
Due to the delay in time between an event (commencement, completion, etc.) occurring and the reporting of that event to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), NCVER estimates the most recent figures. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. The final counts are those submitted by jurisdictions. Further details on the methodology can be found in the 'Estimation of apprentice and trainee statistics' technical paper [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 100.15].
Notes: The [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 pandemic in Australia has created uncertain times for individuals, business and governments, which have affected apprentice and trainee numbers. Care should be taken when comparing 2023 data with data from 2020 to 2022. In-training figures represent the number of apprenticeship and traineeship training contracts where the apprentice or trainee is actively training under the terms of their contract, and who have not completed, cancelled or withdrawn from their training, or had their training contract expired without meeting all of the prescribed requirements of their program. The figure reflects the number of active contracts at a given point in time (at the end of the quarter), and therefore in-training figures cannot be cumulated over time. For this reason, quarterly comparisons are equivalent to 12-months ending comparisons, as they both represent the changes as at 30 June from one year to the next.
In Australia, there were 377,715 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2023, a decrease of 12.0 per cent from 30 June 2022. Training activity in the June quarter 2023 compared with the June quarter 2022: commencements decreased by 49.7 per cent, to 38,945; completions increased by 3.5 per cent, to 21,660; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 5.4 per cent, to 31,310. Training activity in the 12 months ending 30 June 2023 compared with the 12 months ending 30 June 2022: commencements decreased by 40.1 per cent, to 166,375; completions increased by 13.6 per cent, to 101,580; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 7.4 per cent, to 130,470.
