This infographic provides a snapshot of apprenticeships and traineeships across Australia. It presents statistics on commencements, completions, cancellations and withdrawals and those currently in training. Unless stated otherwise, data are derived from the latest National Apprentice and Trainee Collection (no. 105, September 2020 estimates), which is compiled under the Australian Vocational Education and Training Management Information Statistical Standard (AVETMISS) for Apprentice and Trainee Collection Specifications, Release 7.0, October 2015.

Due to the delay in time between an event (commencement, completion, etc.) occurring and the reporting of that event to NCVER, NCVER estimates the most recent figures. The estimation method involves weighting recently processed numbers based on average reporting lags. As estimates are revised for up to seven quarters, figures for the last two years may differ from those published in earlier or in subsequent reports. The final counts are those submitted by jurisdictions. More information, including longer term trends, detailed data and explanatory notes, is available. The states and territories are diverse in terms of economies, industry and VET policy and this needs to be considered in any detailed analysis.

There were 266,565 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 June 2020, a decrease of 3.9 per cent from 30 June 2019. In the June quarter 2020, compared with the June quarter 2019: commencements decreased by 35.8 per cent, to 21,115; completions decreased by 24.4 per cent, to 14,820; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 28.7 per cent, to 15,120. In the 12 months ending 30 June 2020, compared with the 12 months ending 30 June 2019: commencements decreased by 14.2 per cent, to 133,505; completions decreased by 5.7 per cent, to 83,965; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 9.4 per cent, to 77,835.

This publication presents a summary of information gained from the national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 2000 at a TAFE institute in Western Australia. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Graduates were those students who completed their course during 2000 and graduated with a qualification. Module completer information was collected on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions. This document contains a summary of the data collected and a brief look at some of the findings from analysis of these data.

The figure reflects the number of active contracts at a given point in time (at the end of the quarter), and therefore in-training figures cannot be cumulated over time. For this reason, quarterly comparisons are equivalent to 12-months ending comparisons, as they both represent the changes as at 30 September from one year to the next.

In Australia, there were 402,245 apprentices and trainees in-training as at 30 September 2022, an increase of 14.0 per cent from 30 September 2021. In the September quarter 2022, compared with the September quarter 2021: commencements decreased by 41.3 per cent, to 29,420; completions increased by 33.4 per cent, to 24,655; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 28.1 per cent, to 32,950. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2022, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2021: commencements increased by 6.1 per cent, to 254,700; completions increased by 20.9 per cent, to 95,300; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 34.3 per cent, to 127,510.

This leaflet offers a brief summary of information relevant to Western Australia gained from the national survey of TAFE students who completed their courses and graduated with a qualification from a course of at least 200 hours or one semester in duration. In the September quarter 2019, compared with the September quarter 2018: commencements increased by 1.7 per cent, to 34,690; completions increased by 1.3 per cent, to 20,715; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 1.6 per cent, to 22,840. In the 12 months ending 30 September 2019, compared with the 12 months ending 30 September 2018: commencements decreased by 1.3 per cent, to 156,265; completions increased by 3.2 per cent, to 89,310; and cancellations and withdrawals decreased by 0.1 per cent, to 88,030.

There were 276,250 apprentices and trainees in training as at 31 March 2019, a decrease of 0.9 per cent from 31 March 2018. In the March quarter 2019, compared with the March quarter 2018: commencements increased by 2.2 per cent, to 55,680; completions increased by 4.9 per cent, to 22,885; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 2.9 per cent, to 23,130. In the 12 months ending 31 March 2019, compared with the 12 months ending 31 March 2018: commencements decreased by 2.7 per cent, to 157,880; completions decreased by 1.8 per cent, to 89,520; and cancellations and withdrawals increased by 0.1 per cent, to 89,465.

The VET Knowledge Bank is an online resource comprising a suite of products that together aim to provide a collected memory of Australia's vocational education and training (VET) system and act as a reference source for the VET sector. Since 1974, the VET system in Australia has been jointly funded by the Commonwealth and state and territory governments. Government budgets can be large documents and often include multiple papers. The Budget highlights section of the VET Knowledge Bank aims to make it easier to locate sections that relate to skills and training in Commonwealth, state and territory budgets.

Known variously as skills, funded training, priority skills, skills needs, and subsidised training lists, these lists are published by each Australian state and territory to inform registered training organisations (RTOs) of the training that will be subsidised by the governments. The lists are updated yearly at a minimum, and reflect the government priorities and industry needs for skilled workers in particular occupations.
