The Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) has been funding research that examines design and innovation since 1997. As the research evolved, the findings demonstrated that identifiable skills for innovation are accessible to most of us under the right conditions and can be utilised by all workers in an organisation. This publication provides a comprehensive practical example of how an organisation can use the innovation skills and embed them into processes, products and services. Kangan Batman TAFE Automotive Division volunteered to act as the case study for this publication. The skills identified from the research have been tested with several organisations and are described within the text.

The need to develop a training culture through effective marketing analyses and responses is emphasised in 'A bridge to the future: Australia's national strategy for vocational education and training 1998-2003' (indexed at TD/LMR 85.683). The Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) initiated a project to develop a national marketing strategy on skills acquisition and lifelong learning with the aims of: (a) motivating the Australian community and enterprises to acquire skills and take part in lifelong learning; and (b) creating a framework of effective marketing of skills acquisition and lifelong learning products and services. Extensive national market research into the attitudes and values of Australian enterprises and individuals towards developing skills and participating in lifelong learning was undertaken to inform the development of the strategy. Surveys of the supply and demand side of training were undertaken with employers, the general community and training providers. A series of reports contain the findings of this market research program. This report summarises the results of the general community survey that interviewed people aged 16 years and over on their attitudes, values and behaviour in relation to skills and lifelong learning. The report draws on the survey results to provide a preliminary segmentation of the general community into main attitudinal 'types' or 'segments' and an analysis of each segment's knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, barriers and incentives to participation in skills acquisition and lifelong learning.

This article reports on the Frontline Management Initiative (FMI) developed as a strategy to support and enhance the competency of Australian Frontline Management. The development process of the FMI and an FMI Kit to support the implementation of the FMI in enterprise are briefly outlined. The kit was piloted in 5 organisations over a six month period and the issues that arose suggest that enterprises must customise the process of implementation to suit their organisational situation. The article then describes how FMI works, the benefits for organisations, qualifications required by assessors, and competency standards. Show less
