This resource is for trainers in the arts and cultural industry who, in the process of delivering vocational training, also need to support the development of a young person's literacy (including workplace communication) and numeracy skills. This resource may help a trainer to be prepared for those trainees who are attracted to arts and cultural industry training because they perceive it to be very hands-on and practical. Some of those trainees may not be prepared for the literacy and numeracy demands of the training. The resource contains suggested approaches to developing a trainee's literacy and numeracy skills and sample activities using these approaches. It also shows trainers how to identify the literacy, language and numeracy demands of a unit of competency. The resource can be used for all training packages in the arts and cultural industries. It provides assistance to VET practitioners who work with training packages and are seeking to implement learner-centred, flexible and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Also included in the guide is a range of professional development strategies and activities that will assist trainers to fully utilise this resource. It: (1) provides examples of good teaching practice in different settings; (2) endorses teaching practice that is learner centred, activity based, reflective and collaborative; (3) provides sample learning activities that have been successful in different learning settings; (4) supports teachers in the development of their own materials; and (5) provides professional development activities and program ideas. The elective responds to calls from business, federal and state government for increased preparation of young people for career through enhancement of life, work and education access and opportunities. It provides a theoretical background to career education for Australian schools and prepares pre-service teachers to be able to stimulate their secondary school students to inquire about, consider and understand the complex nature of the world of work and the multiple career options which may be available to them through further education, training and employment.
