Vocational student organizations (VSOs) are an integrated part of the overall curricula in most educational institutions, providing many educational and work experiences in the classroom, as well as benefits to faculties, school administrators, and communities. They are an important bridge between the real world and the world inside the classroom. By participating in VSOs, educators can observe what technological training is missing in their vocational programs and consequently can take steps to ensure that their local VSOs either remain or become part of a more futurist-oriented educational society by serving as a vehicle for student exposure to and experiences with recent advances in high technology. As part of the Australian Government's contribution to the National Partnership on Youth Attainment and Transitions, existing youth, career and transitions programs were consolidated into two new programs from 1 January 2010: School Business Community Partnership Brokers and Youth Connections. Youth Connections provides a safety net for young people who have disconnected or are at risk of disconnecting from education, and offers flexible case managed support and services that recognises the role that family and community play in a young person's wellbeing and development. The purpose of the outcomes framework and evaluation strategy is to define the Australian Government's objectives of the Youth Connections program and how those objectives contribute to the goals set by the National Partnership on Youth Attainment and Transitions.

The project was commissioned in response to feedback from a Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) discussion paper, The Bologna Process and Australia: next steps. The Bologna Process is part of a European initiative aiming to establish a single European Higher Education Area by 2010, focusing on curriculum and quality assurance. A key outcome is the Diploma Supplement that is currently being issued to graduates by higher education institutions in large numbers of European countries. The aim of this project was to develop an agreed template for an Australian version of the European Diploma Supplement and to make recommendations on detailed implementation and management strategies. The key recommendation from the project is for the introduction of an Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement that will take the form of documentation provided to graduates by awarding institutions in addition to the degree or diploma certificate or testamur. Its purpose will be to make qualifications more portable and their value more transparent by providing descriptions of the nature, level, context and status of the studies that were pursued and completed by graduates, as well as information about the education system to which the qualification belongs.

This report provides information on the factors affecting participation of regional students in Australian universities. In particular, it examines the relative importance of socioeconomic status and access to university in influencing higher education participation across regions. The report shows that regional participation in university among 19-21 year-old students increased from 18 per cent in 1996 to 21 per cent in 2006. However, university participation among metropolitan students increased faster from 28 per cent to 35 per cent, so that the gap between regional and metropolitan participation increased from 10 percentage points to 12 percentage points. The report finds that lower socioeconomic status, as measured by education and occupation levels, explains most of the gap in participation between regional, outer metropolitan and inner metropolitan areas. While proximity to campus matters, the report finds that access to university appears to have less influence on university participation than socioeconomic status.

This study examines the mathematics and vocational-technical reform movements. Both movements aim at providing all students with a challenging curriculum and the learning required for today’s world. The questions are: what are the characteristics of promising programmes engaged in bridging these two reform movements? and what can we learn from these programmes to inform the development of rigorous integration efforts? This study addresses these questions by building an understanding of integrated programme development and approaches to linking the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and mathematics/career curricula. Four promising programmes are identified and case studies are run to establish the development and extent to which the NCTM standards guided local efforts. Findings indicate that linking NCTM standards to emerging career-orientated curriculum is not a simple process requiring pedagogical changes only. It is a challenge that will involve comprehensive restructuring of the curriculum, instruction and assessment. Organisational and management changes are also necessary. Show less

This publication consists of two research updates. The first, ‘Learning to work: how parents nurture the transition from school to work’, highlights conclusions from the study, ‘Lessons from life’s first teacher: the role of the family in adolescent and adult readiness for school-to-work transition’ [indexed at TD/INT 58.407], which offers an analysis of how families contribute to work-related learning. Its intended audience is parents. It describes two views of family involvement, discusses family pressures, and lists behaviors of proactive families that make significant contributions to the welfare of their members and the strength of the national work force. It also lists strategies that proactive families use to support learning and examples of work values found among proactive families. Sources of assistance for parents to use to enhance the family’s capacity to nurture work-related development are cited. Seven resources for further information are listed. The second update, ‘Family matters … in school-to-work transition’, is intended for educational leaders and policymakers. It discusses the importance of families in the school-to-work transition and assumptions that have limited the recognition of the family’s role. Drawing on the same study as the first update, this report addresses three topics: proactive, inactive, and authoritarian families; family work values that improve school-to-work readiness; and ways families influence work readiness. Policy recommendations are made.
