This report presents the findings from the first phase of a longitudinal study of outcomes of vocational education and training (VET) programs. This 1997-2000 pilot study, a sequel to 'Issues regarding higher education graduates in vocational education and training' (indexed at TD/TNC 54.07), was developed to provide information about TAFE graduates over a period of time and to address the specific needs of the VET system in South Australia. This phase of the study found that the most commonly identified reason for choosing to study at TAFE over other educational institutions or providers was an opportunity to gain extra skills and employment, and this was fulfilled for the majority of respondents.

This publication presents a summary of information gained from the national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1999 at a TAFE institute in Australia. Information is given about two groups of students: graduates and module completers. Graduates were those students who completed their course during 1999 and graduated with a qualification. Module completer information was collected on students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification and had left the TAFE system at the time of the survey. The survey gathered information on the employment situation of TAFE graduates, reasons for undertaking the course, relevance of the training to their employment, satisfaction, and further study intentions. This document contains a summary of the data collected and a brief look at some of the findings from analysis of these data.

This publication presents an overview of available information about recreation, leisure and personal enrichment training programs in Australia during 1998. The figures for 1998 show continuing high levels of activity in personal enrichment programs, though with an apparent small reduction on 1997 levels (TD/TNC 57.03). These programs feed into two of the major policy goals for Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) system: the promotion of lifelong learning; and the development of a training culture. Differences between personal enrichment programs and vocational programs are discussed, and despite expressed concerns about the definition and scope of personal enrichment programs, the information delivered in this report suggests that the contribution to the two major policy goals by people undertaking personal enrichment programs and the providers delivering this education and training is an important and probably understated one.
