This course is a revision and amalgamation of several existing courses, with the inclusion of new subjects in the area of office automation. It addresses the need to rationalise existing courses, providing a progressive course of study with the option of early exit points. It removes unnecessary duplication.

The course also addresses the need to provide for changes in technology and the need to recognise that, with multi-skilling, word processing is no longer the domain of the 'typist'. This course arose out of a major revision of the Certificate in Supervision course which required review and updating due to rapid changes in the role of supervisors, especially with the introduction of award restructuring and changes in legislative areas such as equal employment opportunity, affirmative action and occupational health and safety.

This is a Department of Employment, Education and Training-funded course run by the Woden, Canberra, Office of the Commonwealth Employment Service and is aimed specifically at people who already have some typing skills which need updating and who need to learn to operate a microcomputer.

The course aims to provide skills which will enhance employment opportunities. It also aims to provide training in communication for the office, training in occupational health and safety and to enhance personal skills in relation to employment, education and training. Eligible participants will be drawn from the JOBTRAIN target group which includes the long-term unemployed and those with a specific disadvantage in gaining access to the labour market, with particular emphasis on women returning to the workforce and JET program participants. This paper addressed the issues of how the National Training Board (NTB) should go about its tasks and what its priorities should be, through a clarification of the concept of national skill standards, their content and nature, and the principles which the Board should adopt in examining and ratifying the skill standards proposed by industry.

The principal matters discussed are: the choice of a standards framework for Australia; the process and methodology by which standards should be developed; the format and content of standards, and; quality assurance matters. Show less
