This literature review, which has a separate executive summary, provides an analysis and synthesis of literature relevant to the development of vocational education and training (VET) pedagogy that will underpin the work of teachers in TAFE NSW. It includes both Australian and international research published online and in traditional print form and aims to provide teachers with an overview of the most recent developments in thinking about teaching and learning in postcompulsory education and training. It identifies ideas which are contested so that VET practitioners can participate in the debates that develop professional practice. It is becoming increasingly clear that no one perspective will provide all the answers about how adults learn at all ages, in all situations and across all content matter. It is also clear that the literature on adult learning cannot be neatly classified into distinct theoretical groupings. The field is dynamic and what is important is that knowledge is kept current and enhances understanding through debate so that this can be applied to understand practice and to seek innovation and continuous improvement.

What can be drawn from the existing literature is a framework for understanding adult learning. It is more likely that a framework for vocational teaching will come from the second part of this project - the case study field work and analysis of practices in TAFE NSW and elsewhere, together with the production of new knowledge by VET practitioners actively engaging in communities of practice, informed by an understanding of the context in which they work and an awareness of the issues and debates raised by the literature. This report contains case study field work and analysis of practices in TAFE NSW Institutes and other sites to provide a current picture of developments in teaching and learning and to capture the views of practitioners who are leading the field in innovative teaching and learning. The case studies provide teachers with ideas for enhancing the innovation of teaching and learning practices. The case studies describe innovative teaching and learning practices where teachers are able to balance industry workplace needs and educational system requirements to ensure that the learner's needs have the best possible chance of being met. The studies depict a range of learning approaches and environments. They are drawn from a variety of vocational education and training (VET) organisations across Australia and internationally.
