This presentation reports some early findings on the experiences of students enrolled in vocational education and training (VET) courses in early childhood education and care who are recent arrivals in Australia and who are living in remote or regional towns. The main focus of the research is to understand the challenges faced by students adjusting to a new cultural and educational context with the view to better targeting student support services. The research was generated by recent shifts in student demographics in the [Central Queensland] CQUniversity footprint and specifically, increasing course enrolments for early childhood education and care students transitioning to Australian English and who are new arrivals in Australia. This shifting pattern of enrolment was generated by the strong demand for qualified early childhood educators in remote and regional Australia fuelled, in part, by the 'resource boom' in some regional communities. The main purpose of this study is to explore 'what works' in facilitating students' engagement with and progression in a Certificate III or Diploma course in early childhood education and care.
