The popularity of the publication 'America's best colleges: how to find the best school for you' by US News and World Report, has left many with the possibly mistaken impression that there is an easy way to quantify which are the best US colleges. This list is aimed primarily at students and their parents looking for undergraduate courses, not for employers and recruiters seeking to target future employees. This paper challenges the idea of a comprehensive and quantitative assessment and raking of schools. The author identifies some weaknesses in the scoring systems used by the US News and World Report and suggests an alternative system of ranking that may be of some use to employers and recruiters.
