This study demonstrated that students in training programs that are certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence score higher on a test of knowledge of automotive mechanics than students in highly similar, noncertified programs. Students in certified and noncertified programs at the secondary and postsecondary levels in two states were tested at the end of their training. The Test of Cognitive Skills was administered to control for differences in the measured intelligence of the students. Analysis of the intercorrelations of the subtests and comparisons of the secondary and postsecondary scores provide evidence of the construct and concurrent validity of the test of knowledge of automotive mechanics.
