In this study of the effects of gender and social background on access to postsecondary education in Russia since World War II, the author uses data from the Survey on Education and Stratification in Russia (SESR). These data provide complete educational trajectories allowing for accurate estimates of how type of secondary education affects access to postsecondary education, and how gender, social origins and other variables affect the odds of entry to postsecondary institutions. The data show that the effects of origins tended to strengthen during the late-Soviet and post-Soviet periods when institutional changes and economic crisis challenged the education system.
