Among the many requirements for a registered training organisation (RTO) to continue with its registration and ongoing quality improvement processes is the need to consult with industry on a regular basis. Consultations of this nature can ensure that training organisations continue to provide high quality training and assessment processes that closely enhance the operations of organisations, and build on the capacity of the organisation’s workforce to meet the needs of its customers.

As a trainer and director of a small RTO whose primary focus is on enhancing the quality of support workers for the disability sector, the author has conducted a number of consultations with managers of disability sector organisations, not only as part of the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) requirements, but also as a way of marketing her business generally. In this paper, she shares the results of recent consultations with managers. The results highlight the problems associated with RTOs not clearly hearing the problems that these managers have experienced when dealing with RTOs, whether TAFE or privately operated. Examples include: managers being requested to participate in sessions because the trainers have no industry-specific content knowledge or experience; trainers not supporting training participants over the duration of their course; no contact, or difficulties with contact, with the RTO regarding various issues; and the impact of the costs of on-the-job assessments for not-for-profit organisations. Possible ways to address problems such as these are identified, with a particular focus on examining the need for professional standards and ethics amongst the RTOs themselves.
