Monte Carlo simulation studies are widely used by statisticians and research methodologists in education and psychology. In this article the authors introduce applied researchers to the nature and utility of these types of studies. Information is presented on why Monte Carlo studies are conducted, how they are designed, and what kinds of information they provide. Discussions of design and analysis issues are based not only upon published literature but also upon the authors' experience in conducting simulation studies. Readers will gain an appreciation of simulation studies, as well as knowledge about incorporating the results of such studies in the design and interpretation of their own research. Show less
