Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to outline the different types and features of apprenticeships available in the 1950s. Design/methodology/approach - The term 'apprenticeship' has lost the weight it had when it was originally conceived in the sixteenth century, and has now (at the time of writing) become a blanket term. It covers: temporary and transient positions - messengers, lorry-drivers' mates, etc.; juvenile workers - assembly line work (little or no training) and 'genuine apprentices' - including craft/trade apprenticeships, student or technical apprenticeships, and graduate apprenticeships. People are assigned to a grade of apprenticeship based on how a person achieves in the national educational system. Findings - Apprenticeships vary in terms of: length of training, content, future career progression possibilities and education provided. It is suggested that the industry joined and training provided, alongside the opportunities available may be more valuable to a school leaver than an 'apprenticeship'. Originality/value - This paper provides a useful look on the role of an apprentice in the 1950s.

The aim of this overview paper is to inform current New Apprenticeship Centres and other interested parties of the proposed arrangements for the next New Apprenticeships Support Services (NASS) contract round. It notes briefly the expected roles of the Centres and of NASS in regard to the engagement of the employer and of the apprentice in the training system. Show less

Four students who won the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) training awards in 1995 were asked where they are now and how their achieving the awards affected their careers. Those interviewed were:

Teresa Greer, Apprentice of the Year, apprentice plumber and gasfitter;

Mark Cave, Vocational Student of the year, travel consultant;

Jacquelynne La Fou, Trainee of the Year, apprentice gardener;

Joseph Cleland, DEETYA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander of the Year, apprentice carpenter and joiner.

The Modern Australian Apprenticeship and Traineeship Scheme (MAATS) is central to the federal government's policy for vocational education and training (VET). This annotated bibliography includes material written about MAATS in the last quarter of 1996. Included are government policy documents as well as articles both supportive and critical of MAATS.

The responsibility of training apprentices was entrusted by the Government to the Fiji National Training Council (FNTC) under the Training Act of 1973. The policy regarding apprenticeships is laid down by the FNTC on recommendation by the Council’s Apprenticeship Training Board.The practical training of apprentices is provided by employers at job sites and the theoretical training is given by the Fiji Institute of Technology and other approved training institutions. This booklet provides information about the FNTC’s Industry Training Boards, service sections and its Levy and Grant schemes. Show less

A study of 106 male apprentices working in the building and construction industry examined the occurrence of mentoring relationships. The results indicate that apprentices identify a range of mentors in their lives, predominantly in their personal lives, and that the majority of these relationships develop organically. In particular, apprentices value the psychosocial support that these mentoring relationships provide. Findings from the study support an expanded definition of mentoring to include significant others. Recommendations include encouraging the development of young working men’s social networks as a key factor in promoting social support and increasing apprentice retention.

In November 1979, the Australian Commonwealth government introduced a $1000 Employer Cash Rebate Scheme (ECRS) to encourage employers to take apprentices into training. The purpose of this paper is to examine the scheme as it operated during 1980-81, when metal, electrical or building trades employers were eligible and to report on a limited evaluation of the scheme's effect during this time. The evaluation analysed the following aspects of the scheme's operation: who took up the rebates; what was the effect on the number of apprentices; and what improvements in the guidelines of the scheme could be brought about.
