There is a global demand for health professionals. In developing countries, the health workforce is ageing rapidly. In Australia, 42 per cent of surgeons were aged over 55, and the average age of nurses was 50. Health workforce migration is seen as an answer to short-term domestic labour shortages. In Australia, migrant health workers are often recruited to work in rural, regional and remote areas. Developed countries are looking at specific migration categories that are designed to attract and retain skilled workers. Changes in the rules for international students are also being examined as a way of alleviating the shortages. Australia, like other developed countries, will face increased competition in attracting and retaining skilled health migrants. Show less

This research is about how one community college preserved and strengthened their technology internships during [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID with commitment and creativity. Although the college, employers, and students faced technical, logistical, and supervisory challenges in maintaining technology internships through the pandemic, the college was committed to ensuring their resilience because they were required for graduation. As a result, many interns had opportunities to gain new skills related to navigating virtual work arrangements. In addition, employers drew on interns to fill staffing shortages and internships continued to serve as a key bridge to technology employment during the pandemic.

The strains on labor capacity in oil and gas construction markets worldwide are becoming increasingly well known. These strains continue to affect projected project costs, and several large capital projects have already been delayed or cancelled as a result of rising costs and questionable long-term profitability projections. As demand continues to increase in the face of the liquified natural gas (LNG) export gold rush, construction firms are faced with unprecedented pressures to retain and grow talent. To keep up with this extremely dynamic and competitive - if not unprecedented - business environment, US energy infrastructure construction firms need to develop a robust talent pipeline to tackle the industry's many business challenges in the coming years. This article provides oil and gas construction demand and labor supply forecasts, presents key labor dynamics in today's US oil and gas construction industry, and summarizes recommendations on how to prepare for the imminent labor and knowledge void.

This focus study has been carried out within the framework of the European Migration Network (EMN). The study maps out important aspects and basic assumptions in relation to the debate about current skilled labour shortages and the future demand for skilled labour in Germany. It also provides an overview of the most important parameters and calculation bases used to determine and further observe skilled labour shortages and skilled labour supply. Key aspects addressed in the report are: (1) the extent to which a skilled labour shortage exists in Germany and whether it is temporary and/or limited to certain regions; (2) ways to identify and measures skills shortages if they exist; (3) the occupations and occupational fields affected most by skilled labour shortages; (4) methodological challenges and difficulties associated with the calculation models most commonly used at present; and (5) the role of migrants from third-countries in satisfying actual demand for labour and in compensating for potential labour shortages.

At the request of EE-Oz Training Standards, the Industry Skills Council for the ElectroComms and EnergyUtilities sectors, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) conducted a survey of employers' recruitment experiences for the gas supply industry in July 2011. The survey was conducted by telephone interview with 86 employers operating in or supplying equipment or services to the industry. The results of the survey suggest that the industry is growing strongly, and that employers commonly had difficulty recruiting suitable staff, particularly engineers. The continued growth of the industry will ensure there are ongoing opportunities available across a range of skilled levels including for entry-level occupations such as building and plumbing labourers and sales assistants.

Concerns have been raised by a number of industries in Australia, particularly in the resources, construction and tourism sectors, regarding labour and skill shortages in the Australian labour market. The External Reference Group (ERG) was established to examine how selected temporary skilled migration measures can help ease labour shortages. To respond to immediate labour market pressures and enable a more rapid response to the needs of key industries the ERG proposed a number of improvements to the procedures and processes around the temporary skilled migration program. The report outlines a list of recommendations which are divided into the following seven sections: better long term planning; streamlining application and approval processes; improving the effectiveness of government resources; elimination of duplication and unnecessary administration; providing scope for flexibility; remaining competitive; and branding. The tourism and hospitality industry is forecast to experience continued strong growth in the years to come. To support this growth the industry must have access to skilled labour. This workforce development strategy has been developed by industry, together with the industry skills council, and represents a commitment from industry to work together. The strategy is an important step in continuing to address the skills and labour shortages in the tourism and hospitality industry. The Tourism and Hospitality Workforce Development Strategy outlines the priority areas for achieving the overall goal of access to the number of skilled employees that the tourism and hospitality industry will require to be successful in the future. These include: (1) a highly skilled workforce; (2) expanding the traditional workforce; (3) access to quality workplaces; and (4) better workforce planning.

The Skills and Labour Market Research Unit (SLMRU) within [Foras Aiseanna Saothair] FAS was set up to investigate the supply and demand of skills in the Irish economy. [This report] is an attempt to examine the supply and demand of healthcare skills in Ireland. The report focuses on skilled healthcare occupations and examines the supply and demand trends of almost 30 occupations in the healthcare sector. The report contains details of the employment structure in each occupation including gender, numbers employed, and employment growth. This information is used to give a description of both the historical and current status of the occupations. The report also includes an analysis of a number of variables which may be regarded as indicators of shortage. These variables include immigration and vacancy data. This data, combined with the data on employment trends, provides an indicator of the current level of demand for each occupation. The report presents an overview of the current education provision for healthcare occupations and how it has evolved. It includes information on the numbers who enrol and graduate from education programmes in healthcare disciplines. This information, combined with estimates on the numbers of students who do not complete their education and the number of graduates who do not work in the healthcare sector in Ireland after graduation, is used to forecast future supply. The report also contains forecasts of the demand for healthcare professionals.

Access to quality health care providers continues to be challenging in rural and remote regions of Australia with resultant gaps in health outcomes and life expectancy. There has been some focus on medical practitioner shortages in these areas, however there is limited understanding of how nursing and allied health students and early career practitioners choose locations to practice. This study aimed to provide additional information about the decision making process nursing and allied health students and recent graduates undertake when they consider rural and remote practice. This study extends an earlier exploration of medical students and junior doctors practice location decision making commissioned in 2014 by Rural Health Workforce Australia, namely 'Understanding the decision to relocate rural amongst Australian trained urban medical students and junior doctors'. This study was also informed by a review of the Australian nursing and allied health rural and remote recruitment literature of the past 10 years.
