This report outlines the findings of a consultancy undertaken by the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) to inform the New Apprenticeships incentives review being conducted by the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). The consultancy comprised five phases: (1) Statistical overview. A statistical overview of New Apprenticeships detailing: apprentice and trainee characteristics (e.g. age, gender, part-time/full-time, indigenous, disabled, rural and remote etc.); employer characteristics (e.g. size, industry and occupations); nature of training undertaken (e.g. field of study, qualification levels, hours); providers of training; growth in numbers of apprentices and trainees (e.g. commencements); and number of completions and non-completions (e.g. withdrawals/cancellations), as at June 1998 and June 2001; (2) Trend analysis. A trend analysis of New Apprenticeship data (commencements, recommencements, completions, withdrawals/cancellations) on a full-time and part-time split and on an industry by occupation basis since 1994. the analysis outlines the effect of policy changes on commencements and completions and identifies differences in apprenticeship commencements and completions in the areas of the traditional trades youth, females, indigenous Australians, disabled, and rural and remote New Apprentices as well as the duration of New Apprenticeships by AQF level for trades and non-trades; (3) Commencement projections. A range of commencement projections are provided under a range of assumptions; (4) Simulation model of completions. A simulation model of completions was developed from a forecasting model that has been developed by NCVER to forecast completions. The forecast model projects expected completions based on past and present commencements. The model takes account of differences in contract duration, occupation, qualification level, full-time/part-time status; and (5) Policy simulations. A range of proposed policy changes are simulated to assess the likely impact on new apprentice completions. The simulations are carried out under the assumption that the current patterns of contract duration, full-time/part-time status and qualification level by major occupational grouping continue into the future.

This publication provides a snapshot of Australia’s publicly funded vocational education and training (VET) sector for 2012. It presents national information about students and participation, courses and qualifications, module/unit of competency enrolments, hours of delivery and full-year training equivalents. State or territory training provider breakdowns of the data are available as Excel files. In addition, selected data cubes containing information on student characteristics, students by courses, students by industry skills council training package groupings, qualification completions by industry skills council training package groupings and subject (modules/units of competency) enrolments are also available. This publication looks at a broad overview of issues affecting the demand for skills in Australia and the implications of current trends in training and education on future skill supply. With regard to demand, issues such as changes in skill levels and the nature of work are presented and the implications of a changing labour market are examined. The changing demographics of the workforce, the changes in occupational and industry profile and the changing educational requirements on skill demands are scrutinised. On the supply side, trends in postcompulsory education and training are presented. Various levels of participation in education and training are examined together with the demographic profile of participants, the training available and the outcomes achieved. The views of employers are briefly looked at. Finally, the potential impact of Australia's ageing population on future levels of participation and general implications for the future of the education and training sector are considered.

This statistical compendium presents data on participation, achievements and outcomes of Indigenous people in vocational education and training (VET). The data are obtained from NCVER’s three major data collections: the National VET Provider Collection, the National Apprentice and Trainee Collection and the Student Outcomes Survey, and are presented as either static Excel web tables or interactive data cubes.

This publication contains a summary of statistics on persons undertaking vocational training through contracts of training arrangements (apprenticeships and traineeships) for the quarter ending 30 June 2005. It looks at the estimates of apprentices and trainees who were training as at 30 June 2005 and at longer term trends for in-training figures. The profile of the apprentice and trainee population has changed significantly in the 12 months to 30 June 2005 and commencement numbers provide the best guide for the direction of change in the apprentice and trainee population. Newly commencing apprentices and trainees were predominantly aged 19 and under, and male. There was considerable variation in growth in commencements with increases in commencements of persons aged 45 and over and of males. As well, there were commencement increases in the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales with decreases in commencements in the Australian Capital Territory and Tasmania.

A snapshot of vocational education and training (VET) is presented for manufacturing employers, drawing on findings from the 2007 Survey of Employer Use and Views of the VET System and other sources. The information provided includes contextual information about the industry, a profile of training within the industry, and employers’ use of the VET system and their satisfaction with the training provided. This publication provides financial data for vocational education and training (VET) in Australia. It includes information on revenues and expenses, assets and liabilities, and cash flows for the 2000 calendar year. Comparisons with 1999 data have been made where possible. Figures are given for the whole of Australia, the individual States and Territories, and for the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA). This financial information is a primary source about how VET in Australia is financed and where the money is spent. The information presented has been extracted from the accrual-based statements prepared by the States, Territories and ANTA on their VET activity.
