This issue of ‘Centerfocus’ argues that arts education, encompassing dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts, should be included in the vocational curriculum in secondary school. The authors suggest that study of the arts in addition to skills training is a valuable strategy for educating young people for further study and work. The paper documents the relationship between vocational education and arts education over the course of the 20th century. The discussion then examines the relationship between the changing employee characteristics required of the emerging economy of the new century and the implications of these changes for better collaboration between vocational and arts education. In conclusion, the authors look at circumstances favouring cooperation between vocational and arts education teachers, and recommend strategies to facilitate this relationship. Show less

Building on the assumption that the most important skill for the future is the ability to think, an initial framework for an intellectual processes curriculum theory has been described. While it is acknowledged that the curricular framework is incomplete, it is hoped that a critical examination and elaboration of the framework will be undertaken by technology educators. Many of the programs described in recent issues of 'The technology teacher' and 'TIES magazine' contain aspects of the proposed intellectual processes curriculum and should serve as a testing ground for further refinements of this initial framework. In the first section, thirteen professional development themes are presented. Collectively they reflect the comprehensive nature of professional development for school-to-work transition. In the second section, ways to provide school-to-work related professional development to teachers are discussed. Several suggestions for using professional development to help teachers prepare for the school-to-work responsibilities are offered. Show less

This report outlines several reasons why the college preparatory potential of school-to-work programs, originally designed for students not intending to go to college, should be considered. It describes the characteristics of school-to-work programs in the USA, presents some examples of school-to-work programs that have been successful in teaching academic skills and preparing students for college, and outlines empirical evidence to support the argument that these programs are able to function as college preparatory programs. A review of college admissions processes and strategies to assist school-to-work students gain admission to selective colleges, supports the suggestion that for school-to-work to succeed as a college preparatory program there need to be significant changes in both assessment and college admission procedures. The analysis was designed to develop models to analyse the effects of keyboarding on employment, earnings, further educational attainment and related data from the federal government's High School and Beyond data set. Work-based learning, as practised by high schools and community colleges in the United States of America (USA), describes structured work placements designed to promote student learning through a working experience that links work and school. This issue of 'Centerpoint' describes the potential benefits of work-based learning programs (WBLs) for students and presents some of the strategies by which high schools and community colleges provide such experiences. The authors outline the five main purposes of work-based learning: enhancing academic achievement and motivation; increasing personal and social competence related to work in general; gaining a broad understanding of an occupation or industry; providing career exploration and planning; and acquiring knowledge or skill for particular occupations or more generic work competencies. They then go on to discuss the structures for delivering WBL and assessment of the quality of teaching and learning at work in relation to the types of tasks students perform and the social context within which the learning takes place, the influence of the community of practice, and the worksite ‘pedagogy’.
