This qualitative, exploratory study examines the development and implementation of diversity training in small and mid-size organizations in a Midwestern region of the United States. The results are contrasted with diversity best practices and found lacking in key elements identified as most likely to yield success. Specifically, the organizations in this study did not provide training beyond awareness level, failed to conduct front-end needs assessment, provided little if any in-depth evaluation of diversity training and showed varying support for diversity endeavors from the leadership and through connecting diversity training with other systemic initiatives. The article concludes with recommendations for additional exploration of adapting effective diversity training practices to minimize pitfalls and maximize possibilities in small and mid-size systems.

In April 2010, two representatives from the National Science Foundation (NSF), 14 administrators and faculty (most of them NSF awardees in innovative practices in veterans education in [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] STEM), and five representatives from the Department of Defense participated in a structured workshop to discuss academic opportunities for [veterans with disabilities] VWDs. The main objective of the workshop was to identify barriers that veterans encounter in transitioning to college and to draft recommendations for higher education administrators and faculty who work with this population of students. The discussion focused on supporting student veterans' success in STEM fields. The information collected during this workshop, along with the theoretical framework below, led to Experiential Learning for Veterans in Assistive Technology and Engineering (ELeVATE) program, an intensive academic transition program, offered through the Department of Rehabilitation Science and Technology (RST) at the University of Pittsburgh. Some preliminary conclusions can be drawn and recommendations made for future programs.

Drawn from multiple theoretical perspectives (e.g. sociology, economics, psychology, education), researchers have developed several student retention models. Most student retention models are intended for retention of traditional age, full-time students at four year institutions (Bailey and Alfonso, 2005). The staggering high student attrition rate at community colleges necessitates rigorous studies concerning student retention. Built upon prior research studies, [the author] proposes a student retention model for community colleges and estimate the association between student retention and various variables. Data have been drawn from Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and The Beginning postsecondary Students Longitudinal Study (BPS: 04/09). Consistent with other research studies, student academic integration plays a more important role than social integration in student retention. While the proportion of minority students and part-time faculty were found to be associated positively with student retention, institution size and the proportion of female students were found to be associated adversely.

Although there has been increasing optimism about the potential for social media platforms such as Twitter to support educators' professional learning, it is yet unclear whether such promises hold true. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is to explore school administrators' use of Twitter for professional learning. Whereas popular media have described the benefits of platforms like Twitter in broad strokes, the present study provides a detailed account of the practitioner experience. This account includes not only descriptions of what leaders might (or might not) be learning via Twitter, but also some of the benefits of being able to socialize with colleagues online. This qualitative case study draws data collected from 17 school administrators from throughout the USA and Canada. In addition to individual, semi-structured interviews, administrators' tweets were collected for two weeks. Analyses were aimed at perceptions about Twitter, the knowledge shared, and its impact on practice.
Findings presented a paradox: although administrators were enthusiastic about the social and professional benefits associated with Twitter, they did not share or apply much knowledge commonly associated with administrator work. Topically, administrators' tweets tended to focus on technology, rather than other leadership issues. Also, administrators' informal tweets focussed on norms and relationships in the online community, rather than other dimensions to leadership craft. What's more, leaders were rarely able to point to direct changes in their school policies or practices resulting from Twitter.

Objective - Some have hypothesized that community college programs are not sufficiently structured to support student success and that students would benefit from more highly structured programs. This study examines the specific ways that structure is expressed in policy and practice at representative community colleges. Method - Using data obtained from interviews and program websites at Washington State community and technical colleges, [the authors] examine the structure of community college career-technical programs along four dimensions: program prescription, program alignment, access to information, and active advising and support. Results - [The authors] find high levels of structure on all dimensions in the allied health, computer and information science, and mechanics and repair programs. There are moderate levels of structure in the business and marketing programs. Contributions - This study documents the specific ways that community college career-technical programs are structured to support student success, and it provides a framework for examining structure to inform practice and guide future research efforts.

Despite steady job growth, this report shows that the effects of the Great Recession are still with us in the form of 6.4 million jobs that were not created in the United States. The report examines the labor market in the recovery and shows: (1) three million of the missing jobs include college jobs; (2) the economy needs to add 205,000 jobs a month to recover the missing jobs by 2020; (3) there are still two million more part-time workers today than before the recession; and (4) nearly a third of all workers have jobs that are temporary, freelance or part-time.

In this paper we consider whether certain countries are particularly adept (or particularly poor) at getting children from disadvantaged homes to study for a bachelor’s degree. A series of university access models are estimated for four English speaking countries (England, Canada, Australia and the United States) which include controls for comparable measures of academic achievement at age 15. We not only consider access to any university but also admission to a ‘selective’ institution. Our results suggest that socio-economic differences in university access are more pronounced in England and Canada than Australia and the United States, and that cross-national variation in the socio-economic gap remains even once we take account of differences in academic achievement. We discuss the implications of our findings for the creation of more socially mobile societies.
