The changing role of the trainer

This report provides a broad overview of the changing role of the trainer in the context of an increasingly competitive business environment where many organisations will want to realise more of their employees' potential. The report is based on research undertaken in the UK that investigated: who the trainers are, what they do, whether they can be grouped and/or modelled and, if so, how; how trainers see changes in the business environment affecting them; the extent of trainers' impact and influence; the implications of all the changes and how trainers should deal with them; and who trains the trainers and how they should be equipped for the future. This 'map of the territory' is intended to be used as a framework for identifying further research areas and priorities. The report identifies four roles/types of trainer and four main areas in which trainers appear to be involved. Other findings are presented in relation to changes in the role of trainers, the impact of technology on their role, career development for trainers, the skills and qualifications required by trainers, the impact and influence of trainers, determinants of the trainer's role, funding and budgeting of training, and the confusion associated with terminology applied to the training function.
