Training: an exploration of the word and the concept with an analysis of the implications for survey design

Researchers involved with projects surveying training have long been aware of a basic problem: the word 'training' itself may have a different meaning for different people. As a result, data collected from respondents may not necessarily be comparable. Moreover, there is a strong likelihood of under-reporting of training activities, since some respondents may hold a narrower understanding of training than others.
