MEGT Australia Ltd: economic and social study of the Microsoft Traineeship Program: evaluation report

Within the Microsoft Traineeship Program, trainees are officially employed by MEGT while being placed with a host employer within the Microsoft Australia network. Host employer is the term given to employers who provide trainees with day-to-day work and supervision, on-the-job training and development. Program participants take part in two years of on-the-job training while undertaking a Certificate IV in Information Technology, gaining work experience with host employers from a range of sectors.

This evaluation of the program finds that participants may earn up to 50 per cent more than other graduates with the same qualifications. It was also found that host employers enjoyed significantly reduced staff turnover and recruitment costs, and that nine out of ten would recommend the program to other IT businesses. The evaluation also found that: 89 per cent of host employers would or may employ their trainees after they've completed their traineeship; 98 per cent of trainees described their 'on the job' experience as a key benefit; and 39 per cent of trainees were women, 10 per cent higher than the national IT industry average.
