From good to great: the 10 habits of phenomenal educators for Pacific learners in New Zealand tertiary education

This 18-month project to identify educators and teaching practices that are of immense benefit to Pacific students in New Zealand tertiary education and to inform institutional and sectoral improvements. The project was a collaboration of Victoria University of Wellington and Weltec. Its maim aims were to: (1) identify, analyse and describe phenomenal educators who have effective teaching and learning practices in place for Pacific learners; (2) identify and describe the preferred learning styles of Pacific learners; and (3) develop a toolkit which encompasses the learnings. The report includes 11 case studies of the phenomenal educators involved in the project, outlines the methodology, which is built around an Appreciative Inquiry approach, and features student talanoa (the sharing of ideas, skills and experience through storytelling) about their experiences with phenomenal educators and introduces the 10 habits displayed by those educators.
