Information and communications technology industry: environment scan 2015

The Australian information and communications technology (ICT) industry consistently outperforms the economy in servicing business and domestic users. Measures analysed to understand the usage of ICT are all positive indicators of a vibrant industry. Chapter two highlights trends in the ICT industry and workforce including: increased contracting and outsourcing, and the need for sharp and highly specialised skills attained in short bursts, that are changing the nature of the workforce; increasing demand for big data systems, business analytics, mobile and cloud computing across all industry sectors; and continuing security concerns and striking the balance between data mining and data access. Chapter three looks at the workforce development needs including: defining a multiskilled ICT professional; enhancing the value of ICT qualifications; the increasing demand for skills to respond to business opportunities related to Big Data; the impact of changing workplaces on employment and training; and accommodating new leadership styles. Chapter four highlights large increases in enrolments in the ICT Integrated Telecommunications Training Package in Certificate III qualifications. Chapter five considers future directions including priorities for Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) training packages and supporting a responsive national vocational education and training (VET) system. Appendices are also included.
