More than money can say: the impact of ESL and literacy training in the Australian workplace: volume I: the executive summary, the findings and the case studies

This research project was designed to determine the impact of workplace language and literacy training on key aspects of the workplace. Over 500 respondents across five states took part in the study, and were drawn from senior management, unions, supervisors and workers. Interviews, questionnaires, and in-depth follow-up research indicate that there have been significant gains in productivity, efficiency and economic competitiveness linked directly to workplace English language, literacy and numeracy inclusive training. Interviewees identified five areas in which the effects of the training had been felt most keenly and these are employed throughout the document as measuring instruments. They are: direct cost savings; access to and acceptability of further training; participation in teams and meetings; promotion and job flexibility; and the value of training. This is the first volume of a two-volume report and includes the executive summary, the findings, and the case studies.
